Settlement management - indicators
Let's focus on the indicators shown in the upper part of the screen (picture above):
- People: shows the number of people currently living in the settlement. By default, the maximum number of settlers is 10. However, it increases as you obtain more charisma points (1 point = 1 new settler);
- Food: shows the total number of food produced by crops;
- Water: shows the number of drinkable water sources available on the settlement territory;
- Power: shows the total number of power units. You can use it to power up devices (each generator provides a different amount of energy - for example 2 or 3);
- Defense: shows the total number of defense points of the settlement (each turret/trap/outpost provides a different number of these points - for example 2 or 3);
- Beds: shows the number of beds or sleeping bags available on the settlement territory;
- Happiness: shows the general number representing happiness of the settlers - it cannot be larger than 100 points;
- Size: represents how much of the settlement area is filled with structures.
The penultimate indicator, happiness, dictates the dynamic of settlement expansion. Its value is impacted by all the indicators that are shown before it. In general: the more happiness, the greater effectiveness of the settlement (gathering crops etc.).
Settlers' management
You can use workshop mode to give orders to the settlers. In order to do it, activate the workshop mode and then walk towards selected settler and press the action button (order). From now you can:
- select places to which the settler must go (by pressing action button for example at selected place on the ground);
- assign the settler to perform selected action (by pressing action button for example after pointing at a crop - this will make him start taking care of farming);
- Assign a settler to use an item (by pressing the action button for example on a bed - this will make him start using that bed);
- move some of the settlers to different settlements - in order to do it, you must move your cursor at the person you intend to move and then press the reload button. You will see a list of locations to which you can send the settlement (as shown on the picture above).
Supply routes
If there is at least one free settler among the inhabitants of the settlement, you will be able to activate a supply route. Supply routes allow you to gain access (in workshop mode) to junk stocked in workshops of few connected settlements. They also allow to trade resources between settlements (so, if in one of the settlements there would be a lack of food or water, these supplies would be automatically transported there from another location through the connected supply route).
In order to activate a supply route, go to workshop mode, find a free settler, move your cursor on him and then press the button responsible for activating the VATS system (assign to action: supply route). Then select a settlement (check the picture above). The selected settler will now start traveling with a caravan between the settlements.
Information about number of and connections between the supply routes can be received by pressing the walk button while seeing the map (check the picture below).
IMPORTANT: Activating the supply route requires the Mayor perk, rank. 1.
