Subnautica Below Zero: Beginner's Guide Subnautica Guide and Walkthrough
Last update: 06 May 2021
Survival is the most important thing in Subnautica: Below Zero. Unlike in the original game, the story and the survival aspects are more balanced here. However, you still have to take care of your character's needs. You should also remember that not every marine creature is indifferent towards you - they can attack your character. This chapter contains tips that will help you start your journey.
- Watch out for ice floes
- Craft Grav Trap
- Avoid deeper caves
- You lose a few things upon death
- Observe carefully
- Get oxygen tank as fast as possible
Watch out for ice floes
Sadly, you have limited supplies of oxygen. You need to resurface or go back to your base from time to time to replenish your oxygen supplies. If you chose the second option, remember that you are in the arctic zone. The water's surface is covered by ice floes of different sizes that won't let you resurface. Avoid them. Otherwise, you will suffocate.
Beware! Since the game is in Early Access, not all ice floes have collision detection. This means that you can go through some of them.
Craft Grav Trap
Unlock Grav Trap blueprint as soon as you craft yourself a Scanner. Grav Trap fragments are near the first base. Deploy them to catch food with greater ease.
Avoid deeper caves
In the initial stages of the game, your character has limited supplies of oxygen. Your mobility is low, too. Avoid bigger caves until you upgrade your oxygen tank and Seaglide vehicle. You won't be able to resurface in them and get oxygen.
You lose a few things upon death
The bar in the bottom left corner of the screen shows your current health. If it drops to zero, you die. Your character will respawn in the base (except on Hardcore). However, this respawn will cost you a few items from your inventory. Always carry food and water. In the worst case, you can go back to retrieve lost items. They will stay in the place where you died.
Observe carefully
In the original game, the majority of item fragments were kept in various chests or near wrecks. In Below Zero, the majority of the parts is hidden in grass on the ocean's bottom. They are easy to miss.
Get oxygen tank as fast as possible
Your initial oxygen supplies are very limited. You only have enough oxygen to stay under the water for a brief moment. Because of that, you won't be able to reach deeper parts of the map. Invest in Standard O2 Tank. It increases your oxygen supplies, and you can get it right from the beginning.
