Subnautica Below Zero: Arctic & Deep Arctic - biome guide Subnautica Guide and Walkthrough

Last update: 27 March 2021

In Subnautica: Below Zero, the Arctic and the Deep Arctic are actually a single, compact zone and the transitions from one area to the other are very smooth. The fact that these two biomes have been separated in name results only from very small differences between the two locations. Below you will find a description of both of the mentioned biomes.

Arctic

The Arctic is a biome with a depth of roughly 300 meters. Due to the fact that the surface of the water is completely covered with ice, there is no vegetation here. The zone is also devoid of any significant sources of materials. You will only find Rubies and Deep Arctic Resources here.

The zone does not have a large number of threats. The only aggressive species here, the Stalker, should be known to you from the vanilla version of the game. It is not present in the area in large numbers either. This biome is dominated by Glow Whales. These are huge creatures that resemble whales. They are extremely player-friendly. You can interact with them and even ride them. Interestingly, when you ride on them, you do not lose oxygen. The last species that you can encounter here is the Rock Puncher.

Deep Arctic

The Arctic transitions smoothly into the Deep Arctic in its central part. This zone starts at a depth of about 300 meters and reaches a maximum of roughly 700 meters. As with the Arctic, you will not find any vegetation here. The resources that you will encounter in this biome are Rubies, Deep Arctic Resources, and Nickel Ore.

The fauna is identical to that of the Arctic. The central part of the zone is dominated by Glow Whales. On the outskirts of the location, you can come across aggressive Stalkers, as well as Rock Punchers. The deeper you submerge, the fewer species you will encounter.
