Last update: 26 May 2021
This page of the Resident Evil Village guide contains information on how to unlock the Mercenaries bonus mode. You'll learn about the general objectives of the Mercenaries mode, as well as how to earn large amounts of points and high ranks in it.
Mercenaries mode - how to unlock it?
The Mercenaries mode is initially unavailable. In order to unlock it, you must first complete the campaign on any difficulty level.
Return to the main menu and open Extra Content Shop in the Bonuses tab. The first item is Extra Game - The Mercenaries. It costs 10 CP (Completion Points).
In the Bonuses tab you will now find a new item called The Mercenaries. Selecting it will activate the Mercenaries Mode.
Mercenaries mode - general guidelines and tips
The Mercenaries Mode focuses entirely on combat. It doesn't have any storyline. All battles take place in locations known from the campaign. Initially, only the Village is available and you have to unlock subsequent stages by playing well enough. For example, in order to unlock the Castle, you must achieve a final rank of at least A in the village (earn at least 420,000 points).
Before the fighting starts, you can (and should) shop at the Duke's - you can buy weapons, consumables and ammunition from the friendly merchant. You can't afford to buy more right away. Preferably, start by purchasing just one weapon, but a better one than the starter pistol.
You are not required to spend all your credits. You can "put them aside" and spend them in subsequent rounds. Remember to collect the Lei currency left behind by your enemies so that you can spend it during your next visit at the Duke's (or alternatively, keep it to buy the best weapons).
In the room with the Duke, you will find ammo supplies as well. You can loot more ammo in battle arenas. It's a good way because it does not force you to spend credits.
In the Mercenaries mode you must:
- Race against time - you must complete each stage before the time limit expires and you can renew your time limit by killing enemies and finding special orbs (more on that later).
- Earn points and raise the point combo- it is important to try to keep the combo value as high as possible. It is reset to x1 if too much time has passed since the last kill. So try to kill more monsters without much downtime and if the situation requires it, play more aggressively or use better weapons.
Each round requires you to defeat a certain number of monsters. You can deliberately choose the weakest enemies or aim to kill elite enemies as well (e.g. Soldats, werewolves or armored lycans) and hence, earn more points and more credits (Lei).
Once you have dealt with the required number of monsters, a goal will appear. You can go there right away to finish the round as soon as possible or stay in the battle arena and continue eliminating monsters to accumulate more points and credits.
While fighting, look out for Orbs, which come in two main varieties:
- Touching a yellow orb explicitly extends the time limit to complete that round.
- Touching a blue orb allows you to select 1 out of 3 permanent abilities. The unlocked abilities are transferred to subsequent rounds.
At the end of each round / area, the game displays information about the number of points scored. In addition to the base points, you can receive point bonuses for the amount of unused time (Time Bonus) and the amount of unused credits (Money Bonus).
When you have completed all the stages for a particular location, you will see a Total Result and receive one of several possible ranks - C, B, A, S, SS or SSS. Try to get at least S ranks to unlock a set of "basic" rewards for the location.
