Ranger Class in Divinity Original Sin 2 Divinity Original Sin 2 Guide, walkthrough
Last update: 09 March 2020
This page of the Divinity Original Sin 2 guide contains a detailed description of Ranger. You'll get acquainted with the basic information on this class, recommended playstyle, as well as its biggest advantages and potential disadvantages.
Ranger is a hero whose main task is to eliminate all incoming opponents using ranged attacks. Thanks to special arrows, he can efficiently slow down, blind, or apply various statuses to your enemies.
He should always keep to the second line, only except the situations where he needs to break the line to assume a good position. Using the ability to teleport party members, you can teleport him to high objects, which will facilitate combat for him.
You can find the base parameters for this class below.
Attributes
Ranger has two enhanced attributes by default:
Attribute | Value | Notes |
Finesse | +2 | No surprises here - most of the ranged weaponry is scaled according to this attribute. |
Wits | +1 | High initiative will help find a sure ground before your enemy does the same. If you emerge on top (literally), you'll deal higher damage, while your arrows will have longer range. |
Abilities and Talent
The Ranger's abilities:
Name | Value | Notes |
Huntsman | 1 | The ability to be given as much attention as possible. Increasing the bonus to injury, the effectiveness of the attack and leveling the penalty for an inconvenient position will surely be useful in difficult moments of skirmishes, and if you manage to get in a better position then the fight will go smoothly. |
Pyrokinetic | 1 | Additional point allows this character to use spells from this school of magic. Haste is worth mentioning because it increases amount of generated AP by 1 per turn. Another good ability is Peace of Mind which allows a character to cure negative effects and get powerful bonuses to attributes. |
Lucky Charm | 1 | With this ability you have a chance to find extra items of particular value when you search through various containers. In this aspect Special arrows are the most important ones, which end very quickly and are relatively expensive. |
Talent
Arrow Recovery - A chance for retrieving a special arrow after firing it.
Starting abilities
Icon | Name | Notes |
Ricochet | This ability allows you to attack three targets at the same time - it hits the first target, bounces off of it and searches for another enemy. Perfect for attacking enemies that stand in a group.
Peace of Mind | A powerful support ability that costs 1AP and offers bonuses to Strength, Finesse, Intelligence and Wits attributes as well as removes Blinded, Terrified, Charmed, Taunted, Sleeping, Enraged and Mad status affects. Useful throughout the entire game.
Elemental Arrowheads | One of the most unique abilities in the entire game. It allows a Ranger to dip an arrowhead in an element that they stand next to - fire deals Fire damage, blood causes Bleeding and Oil can slow down an enemy. |
Ranger - Races
Race | Predispositions | Notes |
Elf | High | Elves are the best race to create a Ranger. The natural bonus to finesse will increase the base ranged damage, and every attack will be much more efficient. |
Human | Average | Basing on the initiative bonus, a human can be quite a good Ranger, mainly thanks to the ability to get to a better position. However in the early phase of the game, he won't deal as much damage as an elf. |
Dwarf | None | A complete lack of predispositions, but this doesn't mean that you cannot roll a dwarf Ranger. |
Lizard | None | Similarly to dwarves, lizards don't have any special talents that would increase their effectiveness. You should probably find a better use for them. |
Which abilities are worth choosing?
A Ranger has access to two schools (Huntsman and Pyrokinetic) which means that they can choose from 8 starting abilities. The selection was done rather well, however, there is room for small changes. These changes are presented in the table below.
Icon | Name | Notes |
Ricochet | You should leave this ability as it is because it will be useful throughout the entire game.
Haste | This ability can be switched with Peace of Mind. Haste increases Speed Movement of a character and their amount of AP (by 1) at the beginning of each turn. These features are useful for a Ranger who constantly needs to change their position in order to deal maximum amount of damage.
Elemental Arrowheads | A key ability for all characters that use ranged weapons. |
