Experience and levels in Divinity Original Sin 2 Divinity Original Sin 2 Guide, walkthrough
Last update: 09 March 2020
In Divinity Original Sin 2, character can only level up by collecting experience points. This page of the guide lists the most important information regarding levelling up and what bonuses to statistics it may bring.
Difficulty level has an impact on amount of experience that you get.
- Explorer is definitely easier, as the enemies are weaker, the experience points rewarded for quests are the same as in Classic mode, but the extra experience is acquired by visiting certain locations. All you have to do is to discover an atypical passage, teleport to a location that is hard to reach, or just reveal the whole area map, and an additional reward will be added to your account.
- In Classic, Tactician and Honour modes, you get experience only by killing enemies or completing main and side quests. Enemies have increased resistance and they are definitely harder to deal with. In Tactician mode, enemies have additional abilities and they are overall more difficult to defeat while Honour mode introduces save restrictions - you can't do it manually, game is saved automatically and when your entire team is dead your save is removed and you have to start the game from the very beginning.
Below, you'll find a few sections that will introduce you to how party development is handled in Divinity Original Sin 2.
Assigning Experience
Regardless of whether you play alone, or employ the help of other players or heroes placed by the developers, you'll always receive the same amount of experience. The game doesn't have the ability to complete the tasks on your own in order to reach a higher level faster.
The game doesn't divide points between the party members, but always gives the set amount to each of them. As a result, it doesn't matter that the last hit is always dealt by the same hero, each of them will be rewarded the same as long as he is a part of the team. The amount is always, invariably, the same
The mechanic of inviting new members to the party is interesting. Regardless of their earlier actions, each of the party members has the same experience level, and with the moment of joining the party, his level will be increased to the level of other party members.
Progression tree
Once you level up, you'll get points to make use of. With every level, you can count on 2 Attribute points and 1 Combat point. With Civil points and Talents the case is different, because they are attributed every specific number of levels. Everything is presented in detail in the table below.

The amount of XP you need to get may seem intimidating, but it doesn't take that long to level up - you need many XP points, but you acquire them quickly as well. The most important thing is to allocate the points well - especially with those tallents that significantly influence the efficiency of your character, and which are also the most rarely obtained type of points.
The description of developing a character with particular roles in mind (such as defensive/offensive warriors, different types of mages, etc.) can be found in the corresponding chapters of this guide.
Note: There is a way to reset all the points you have invested in the game. You can learn how to do this in the chapter Resetting character development points.
