Reputation mechanic unlocked
You're introduced to the Virtue mechanic for the first time at the beginning of Chapter 2, after reaching Kyo. In the initial moments of exploring Fushimi, Ryoma will help a Shinto Priest.
The man will tell you about a reward for good deeds - Virtue Points. This is not the only way of amassing Virtue - in fact, Virtue Points are rewarded for almost all activities and actions performed in the game. Some of them are rewarded with a one-time point bonus.
Diligence Records
After the encounter with the priest, you will also unlock the Diligence Records. which are small challenges. They are divided into various categories, such as exploration, playing mini-games, taking part in activities, or combat. You can keep track of your progress through the associated menu.
A single challenge may even net you up to a few thousand Virtue points. What's more, the game can unlock a higher level of this challenge (e.g. opening another 50 containers or defeating another 200 enemies). You can continue completing the further levels of the challenges and fight for even more Virtue.
Completing Substories
A good way to acquire Virtue is completing side missions, so called Substories . There are over 70 of them in the game. Each completed Substory guarantees a major inflow of Virtue.
Items that add Virtue
There are items that can increase Virtue - an example of such an object - Spirit Sake - is shown in the screenshot above. Using this item grants you a certain amount of Virtue (e.g. several hundred points).
Spending Virtue
All accumulated Virtue is spent in Shrines . The first shrine is in the Fushimi district, in the place where you met the priest. You can find similar shrines in other locations.
After interacting, select the option to exchange reputation points for rewards - Exchange Virtue .
Ways of gaining Virtue faster
Virtue Cultivation skills are the most important items of the rewards, and you should initially spend all your accumulated points on them. They increase the Virtue gain, meaning that you can get more points (e.g. 350 instead of 300) for the same action (e.g. completing a challenge or Substory).
The maximum possible bonus is 50% more Virtue earned - you will unlock it by purchasing the last upgrade for Virtue Cultivation Maximum Level.
You can also increase your Virtue growth later in the game by crafting a Virtuous Hood at the Kurosane Smithing blacksmith - Kurogane Smithing (Crafting).
To produce the Virtuous Hood, you need the White Headband (e.g. sold at the Rakugai Arms Dealer) and crafting materials - Aquamarine, Beast's Tail and Fine Skill Fabric. The most problematic is Aquamarine - it appears in the list of possible materials to be found in some Battle Dungeons, or you can buy it in the arena shop in Mukurogai for 8,000 Arena Points.
Equip the hood to get 30% more Virtue Points. It also has a free slot for a second Seal you can add yourself.
