This page of the Diablo 2 Resurrected game guide explains how to initiate and complete The Guardian quest in Act 3.
The last location in the game is the Durance of Hate - a three-level dungeon. On the last level of this area, you will face the final boss of this act - Mephisto. To unlock the entrance to the Durance of Hate in Tranvical, you have to destroy the Compelling Orb during the Khalim's Will quest.
Mephisto is a weak boss. First, however, you should dispose of his minions while traversing the third level of the Durance of Hate. Mephisto uses several spells: lightning (as well as chain lightning, which jumps between several targets, including your allies), cold spells that have a chance to freeze you and poison clouds. He has low level elemental resistance to fire, cold and lightning and 50% resistance to poisons.
As a ranged character, you can use a variety of terrain and objects, including the pond in the middle, to block the boss.
On low difficulty levels, however, he has no resistance to physical and magical damage - that's why exclusively melee characters excel during this fight. Of course, his resistances increase at subsequent difficulty levels, but he never becomes fully immune. Additionally, if you constantly fight him in melee, there is a small chance that he will use other spells than poison clouds.
Mephisto is one of the best bosses for grinding experience and acquiring valuable items - he's easy and quick to reach from the nearest portal, he's also easy to defeat and there are quite a few mini-bosses near him that always seem to drop some interesting loot.
To proceed to the next location after defeating Mephisto, use the portal activated upon defeating the boss.
