On this page of the guide to Diablo 2 Resurrected, you will find information and tips on what to do if you have problems with the game or it won't start at all.
- No AVX support / black screen
- Overloaded servers
- Loss of progress
- Error: Failed to initialize Graphics Device
- Error: D3D12 Init Failed
- Audio cutting
If you have problems with running the game, try restarting your computer after installation. Also, make sure that you have a stable internet connection, check for game updates, update the graphics driver and operating system. Note that the game does not work on older systems than Windows 10. In some cases, when you are running or logging in to the client application or the game, you may need to reset the app/computer or even reinstall the Battle.net app. Also, make sure that you do not have any applications that heavily burden your computer (browser, specialized applications such as graphics/video processing programs, or some anti-virus programs) open in the background. You can also try to disable the overlays - such as GeForce Experience, Discord, other applications for recording footage, or displaying the status of components, such as MSI Afterburner or Bandicam. Turn off the overlays by closing the applications or by going to their settings.
No AVX support / black screen
This problem occurs when your processor does not support AVX (Advanced Vector Extensions). You will receive a system error message. A patch to fix that will fix this problem is expected to appear soon. How to check if your processor supports the technology before you buy the game? You can download programs like HWInfo or CPU-Z (both are free) to check the instructions available on your computer - this solution is great if you do not know your processor model (you can check it easily - for Windows 10, click RMB on the Start Menu and choose System.
If the problem occurs after changing the game / monitor's resolution settings, you can try inputting the Alt Enter combination to enter windowed mode - the game's resolution is then reduced. If you're still seeing a black screen, even after restarting the game, that means the problem lies somewhere else.
Intel
Go to the manufacturer's website and find your product. For Intel processors, go to: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark.html?_charset_=UTF-8&q=
Search for your model using the search box on the right (use the Space when entering the model, e.g. i5-4500). On the next page, select the sub-model (unless it doesn't exist). On the product page, scroll down to Advanced Technologies. In the Instruction Set Extensions, you will find information about the available extensions - look for AVX.
AMD
Unfortunately, AMD does not have accurate product information on its website about the available technologies and extensions. However, you can go to https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/WikiChip
Type your processor model in the search box and go to the Features section, where you will find extensions available for your processor.
Overloaded servers
If you are planning on playing online on the release date, expect problems with server overload. This will probably continue for several days since the release, especially on holidays and weekends. A similar problem can occur when servers undergo maintenance - this is usually announced in advance on the developer's platform or website. Additional server overload issues:
- Unable to select a hero and join, "hero is already in the game" message,
- Unable to create a new hero,
- No hero on the list of created characters,
- Black screen (rare).
All these problems are most likely caused by server overloads and will usually be fixed by waiting a certain amount of time and then running the game.
Loss of progress
The problem of losing your character / your last save is a common occurence with players right after the game's release. Curiously, it applies to both online accounts and offline play. The problem occurs on the servers' side, where your saves are preserved. If you want to try to recover your saves:
- Reboot the client, enter the game and immediately quit it.
- Change the region (e.g. Europe -> Asia),
- Start the game again. There's a chance you'll see your character and your progress once again.
- You can try to restore the region settings later.
This method unfortunately doesn't guarantee recovering your saves. It's dedicated for offline play.
Error: Failed to initialize Graphics Device
The problem with initializing the graphics driver is encountered mainly by players using laptops. It could be caused by graphical settings if your graphics card is dedicated and integrated. To fix the problem:
Nvidia Graphics
Open the NVIDIA Control Panel app in the Control Panel or by right clicking the desktop - enter the 3D Settings tab. You can set this option globally: find the Power management mode section and set it to prefer maximum performance. It's recommended however to go to the program settings tab, find the game on the list or add it to the list, then set the option only for that specific game.
AMD graphics
Open the Radeon Settings configuration manager and go to Preferences -> Additional Settings -> Power -> Switchable Graphic Application Settings, then select High-Performance profile.
Error: D3D12 Init Failed
One of the problems with starting the game involves DirectX 12. The first reason it could appear is your graphics card not supporting DX12. If this is not the case, the problem could be caused by apps related to the audio driver. The error code could look like this: NVSDK_NGX_D3D12_Init failed... To fix it, try this:
Go the the Control Panel, then Audio. Turn off all the devices you're not using - especially the Mixer Realtek if you have it. Additionally, turn off all other audio-related apps: mixers, equalizers. They're often given to you alongside the driver or apps dedicated for certain brands of motherboards or laptops. Such apps include: Realtek HD Audio Manager, MSI Nahimic, Alienware Surround Sound, or Asus Sonic Studio. Turning them off shouldn't affect the audio in any way, as they aren't drivers, just apps supporting the sound settings for the user.
Audio cutting
If you have a problem with audio interruptions, even when the game runs smoothly, it could be caused by additional apps for audio handling / mixing or by issues with V-sync. First, try turning off all audio-related apps and follow the steps above (Error: D3D12 Init Failed).
To resolve the V-sync issue, enter the graphics card manager (as in the steps described above in Error: Failed to intialize Graphics Device), enter the app or try to apply global settings for Vertical Synchronization by choosing the Fast option from the list; you can try the other options too if it doesn't work.
