Runes - what they are, how they work

If you want to upgrade your character in Diablo 2 Resurrected, the easiest way to do this is by buying better equipment - weapons, armor or jewelry - Diablo 2 Resurrected: Runes - rules and list - Runes - Diablo 2 Resurrected Guide

If you want to upgrade your character in Diablo 2 Resurrected, the easiest way to do this is by buying better equipment - weapons, armor or jewelry. You can either search for these items, acquire them through gambling, or upgrade items with empty sockets. In the last case, the best solution is to use runes and runewords, which are simply runes arranged in the correct order in the item. What you need to know about runes:

  1. There's a chance to find particular runes - because of this, at some point, you will have many low-level runes that have no significant value and low utility. You'll find your first runes in Act 1.
  2. In multiplayer, runes are often used as currency.
  3. You can use runes without arranging words - however, complete words will provide you with the biggest bonuses.
  4. You can combine single runes and stones / gems in one item
  5. Runes are also used in crafting - when creating magical items of a different level, especially charms and jewelry.
  6. Never sell runes to merchants - they are priced incredibly low.
  7. Runes can be exchanged for other runes in the Horadric Cube if you use the right recipes.
  8. Runes lying on the ground are Orange.

For more information on runewords, check out the Runewords - rules and list page.

List of runes and exchanging recipes

There are as many as 33 types of runes in the game. They are listed below, along with their properties and recipes on how to turn runes into their improved counterparts.

  1. The character's level (sometimes also referred to as Clvl) is the level the character needs to reach before they can use the item containing the rune. As your level increases, your chance to find runes closer to your player level increases as well.
  2. Where to look - the location and difficulty level on which you have the highest chances of finding runes - it will also tell you whether, at your current level, you have a chance to try and create a particular runeword.
  3. Requirements (upgrades) - information about which runes (and possibly gems) you need to create the specified rune. These items are to be combined in the Horadric Cube.
  4. Effects - that is, what bonuses are provided by the rune once inserted into an item's empty socket. Depending on whether it's a weapon or piece of armor (helmet / armor / shield, sometimes the shield has a different effect, which we've included in the table), you will receive different bonuses. Runewords provide a completely different set of bonuses when compared to single runes.
