This page of our Borderlands 3 game guide contains a description of the boss encounter with Shiv. He is not one of the most demanding enemies, but he is the first boss of the game and you will have to defeat him while still learning the basics of the game.

The encounter with Shiv takes place in the final part of the first main mission of the game - Children of the Vault. In this duel you have to rely only on firearms and grenades. The main character does not yet have access to active Action Skills. This means that the course of the battle will be similar for each of the 4 main characters.

During the encounter, Shiv uses a huge melee weapon. He can strike the ground with it with great force and thus send shock waves. Try to constantly stay in motion and, if necessary, also run sideways.

The key to winning a duel with Shiv is to stay at a safe distance from him. Run around the room and keep firing from any firearm. You can also throw grenades, but try to make them land in places where they can deal damage to the boss, like, for instance, in front of him if he is currently running towards your character.

There are also explosive barrels in the room where you fight the boss. You can aim at barrels once the enemy is located near them.

If any of Shiv's attacks is successful and deals damage to you, quickly move away from the enemy and let your energy shield recover automatically. Fortunately, Shiv does not have a shield and will die immediately once his health bar is depleted.
