Divine Retribution | Borderlands 3 Walkthrough Borderlands 3 guide, walkthrough
Last update: 02 October 2019
On this page of our guide to Borderlands 3 you will find a detailed description of the Divine Retribution - last main story mission of the game. Its most important part is a duel with Tyreen Calypso, who will turn into a monster / final boss Tyreen the Destroyer. It will be a long and quite demanding battle. Fortunately, we have described it in small details.
Tannis will open a portal in the place where the previous main quest ended. You can go through it right away, because it's not a point of no return yet. You will be on the map of Destroyer's Rift. Follow the linear path until you reach the Treacherous Drop location. There are slot machines here. Use them to replenish the ammo.
Weapons with high firepower are generally useful for the final battle, but it would be good if one of them were a high accuracy rifle or scope-equipped weapon. After you jump into the hole, the battle with the final boss of the game - Tyreen the Destroyer, will launch.
The battle takes place on a large arena. Run over it a lot.
The Destroyer's primary attack is shooting purple spikes. They travel in large groups, but if you fight the boss from a medium or long distance, then you should have enough time to quickly stand between them.
The boss often combined this attack with another - Tyreen's upper half of the body "popping out" of the Destroyer's body that shoots a purple laser. Try to move from side to side to avoid both the spikes and the laser.
Very important information is that Tyreen's mutated upper half of the body is the boss's weak spot. Shoot at Tyreen to deal critical damage. Due to the small size of the Tyreen in relation to the Destroyer's whole body, we recommend using weapons with high accuracy and/or equipped with a scope.
Other standard attacks of the boss are:
- Throwing fireballs that fall apart and bombard the area. You can stand right under the large orbs that fall apart or far away from the boss to get outside the attack's radius.
- Spitting out big purple projectiles. Start quickly turning to the side as soon as the boss telegraphs the attack. If you get hit with this projectile, you can lose your shield and a portion of health points.
The boss's minions appear regularly in the arena. Ignore them. Eliminate only when you are in Fight for Your Life mode to get Second Wind. Dead opponents drop ammo - this can be very useful given the duration of this battle (this fight should take you over 10 minutes).
The arena is surrounded by moat. There is no need to be afraid that you will fall into the abyss right away. The moat can also protect you against some attacks of the boss and give you time to recover shields.
After the Destroyer receives enough damage, it will temporarily become invulnerable and kneel down. Quickly get behind the boss and climb on its back by jumping on the yellow "shelves" (see picture 1).
Once you are on the Destroyer's ridge, aim at the purple core (picture 2). The boss will throw you down. However, you can attack Tyreen's "revealed" head and deal a series of damage critical to the helpless boss. Try to use a powerful weapon to deal the Destroyer as much damage as possible before it gets up and resumes the fight.
Starting with the first kneeling, the boss will now turn into a fireball from time to time and cover the area with flames. Focus on running between the pillars of fire and avoiding contact with them.
After the boss kneels the second time, it will start using another two devastating area attacks. The first attack shoots energy orbs connected by small beams. The boss will also shoot a few extra orbs in a straight line. The key to surviving this attack is to perform two successful actions in a row - first, avoid the beams (by running, jumping and sliding), and then run between the energy orbs flying in a straight line.
During the second new area attack, the boss flies away from the arena and then bombards it with beams and orbs. As soon as you notice that the Destroyer flies away, try to get to the outskirts of the arena - this will reduce the likelihood of getting hit. It can do a lot of damage, though it shouldn't kill you right away if you have a shield with enough energy points. Alternatively, you can also try to run between the beams. However, this is much more difficult to do than avoiding the purple spikes.
Keep fighting. You can attack the boss continuously - wait for the moment when you can attack "revealed" Tyreen. More critical damage will help you to win the final battle faster. The Destroyer will drop a lot of loot. This also triggers an important cut-scene.
Find the Vault Key from the loot dropped by the final boss. Wait until a large portal materializes and move into the Vault of the Destroyer. It is worth to open the surrounding chests with a rare loot. Your most important objective in this place is to obtain a quest item - Eridian Ascensionator. It is located on the central pedestal.
Return through the portal to the arena where you fought the Destroyer. Go up to your allies and watch another cut-scene.
Move back to Sanctuary and visit Lilith's room next to the Captain's Bridge. Give the key to Tannis. In return, it will open a chest for you in which you can find legendary loot which is the reward for completing the final mission of the game. In our case the prizes were Auditing The Butcher shotgun, SMG Popular Bitch pistol and The Transformer shield, but you may as well find other items.
Talk to Tannis again. Reach a station with three slots for placing an eridian artifact. The Mayhem I difficulty level will be automatically switched on - this issue is described in more detail on a separate section of our guide called Endgame and higher difficulty levels. The final quest will be over after a while.
