How to improve Alan using Words of Power?
After finding and interacting with a Word of Power, 1 skill point will be added to the pool of the given category. To spend accumulated points, you need to visit Writer's Room and then choose the appropriate tab or approach the desk. Categories where an upgrade is possible are marked with yellow.
After selecting a category where an upgrade is possible, you can decide to either unlock or upgrade one of 3 available perks. Most perks have 3 upgrade levels.
Words of Fix
In the Word of Fix category, we especially recommend the "Wellness Retreat" perk which increases Alan's maximum health. This straightforward bonus will help keep the protagonist alive during intense battles. The remaining 2 choices, albeit useful, offer more of a bonus that comes into play in rare situations.
Words of Gun
Choosing one of the upgrades in this category will influence your playstyle heavily. During our playthroughs, we decided to favor the shotgun, which paired with "Personal Space" bonus helps immensely with crowd control and keeping enemies at bay. An interesting choice comes in the form of "Roulette" perk that properly upgraded may help you avoid ammunition shortages when using the Revolver.
Words of War
The choice of the perks here may be influenced by the choices in Words of Gun category. In our case, 2 upgrades from these two categories related to Shotgun usage made it a very useful and dangerous tool. However, if you like to swap weapons on a regular basis, consider choosing one of the remaining perks.
Words of Stuff
Words of Stuff perks are unique among the other categories, as they have only 1 upgrade level. In this category, we've chosen "Tourist Map" which makes finding collectibles and resources much more easier. The remaining 2 perks may also prove to be handy if you are constantly strained by a lack of inventory space or have problems during combat.
Words of Aid
In the case of Words of Aid, we heartily recommend "Prescription" as the perk of choice. Painkillers are the most common and fastest-working healing items. The enhanced version of them should help immensely during heavy combat.
Words of Action
Words of Action is another category where your preferred playstyle will be a deciding factor when choosing perks. We decided to favour "Never There" which makes Alan harder to detect. Sneaking can help you avoid certain unnecessary fights.
Words of Lamp
In the category related to Alan's flashlight, we recommend "Lucky Strike". This perk, when upgraded to level 3, gives you as much as 75% of retrieving a flashlight charge after killing an enemy. With the supply of batteries constantly dwindling, this will help with supplies management.
