Dead Island 2 is a game with strong co-op inclinations, but the mode is unavailable during the first minutes of gameplay. On this page of the guide, we explain when co-op is unlocked and how to choose the type of session (singleplayer or co-op)
The beginning of the game - single player
In Dead Island 2, the entire beginning of the game is played in single-player mode - until past a certain point, cooperation gameplay is not available. The tasks you must do alone are as follows:
- Flight of the Damned story quest - this is a prologue that takes place near the crash site;
- Desperately Seeking Emma - this quest involves the beginnings of exploring Bel-Air and reaching Emma's residence;
- Bel-Air Brawl story quest - involves securing Emma's residence from zombies;
- Call the Cavalry story quest - during this mission, you'll be introduced to workshop and blueprint mechanics.
Completing this introduction to the campaign should take you about 1 to several hours. Much depends on how you've handled optional exploration even at the start of the game.
The moment when co-op is unlocked
During the course of Call the Cavalry story quest you will receive an objective that involves meeting Michael at the back exit of Emma's mansion. They will give you the key to the mansion.
When leaving the building, a message about unlocking the co-op will be activated. From now on, you can stay in single player mode or display online options to begin multiplayer games.
From this point on, every time you start the game, you will be able to:
- Set the session type for Continue Game e.g. single player or co-op.
- Join a multiplayer session right away (Join Game).
