Valheim: Portals Valheim guide, walkthrough
Last update: 02 June 2021
From this page of the Valheim game guide, you will learn what you will need to create a portal and how to set it up and use it.
Portals are extremely useful constructs that allow you to move quickly through the vast game world of Valheim . However, before you can move from one point on the map to another, you need to prepare properly and learn the secrets of the art of teleportation.
How to create a portal?
To create one portal in Valheim you will need a Workbench and certain rare resources. You will discover the recipe for the portal when you collect the Fine wood. However, it should be noted that the number of raw materials must be multiplied by two, because two portals must be erected: an entrance and an exit.
To build one portal in Valheim, you will need:
- 10 Greydwarf (to be gained from defeated Greydwarf in the Black Forest);
- 20 Fine wood (to be obtained, for example, after cutting down birch or beech trees);
- 2 Surtling core (to be obtained in Burial Chambers).
How to use the portal?
After acquiring certain raw materials, build the first portal in the location of your choice. Note that the screen will show that the portal is not connected (Unconnected). By selecting Set tag, you can assign the portal a name of your choice, but be sure to name the other portal exactly the same way - it is case sensitive. Unnamed portals will connect automatically.
When you build the second portal, wait a moment for it to activate - the screen will show Connected. If for some reason the portal does not work, make sure that both the one and the other portal have no name or are described in exactly the same case-sensitive manner.
If you want to teleport, just walk up to the portal and simply walk through it. A screen will appear with a distinctive animation, and after a while your character will appear on the other side.
The portals can be dismantled with a hammer, thus recovering all the raw materials used in construction.
Limitations, risks
Portals in Valheim have certain limitations, and they also affect the environment in certain ways, especially aggressive creatures, luring them in and arousing their desire to attack. If possible, try to secure your portal - place it inside the main building or surround your area with a palisade.
If you want to go through the portal and the screen displays that an item is stopping your character from teleporting, you need to look in your inventory and locate it.
Items that cannot be teleported are easy to recognize because they have a distinctive crossed-out portal icon. Unfortunately, such forbidden items include very heavy metal ore.
