Valheim: Death - what are the causes? What can you die from? Valheim guide, walkthrough

Last update: 22 February 2021

On this page of the Valheim guide, you will find information on what can get you killed.

Your character has a certain amount of life points – their base number is 25. However, this can be increased with different types of food. When a character loses all their HP, they simply die.

The most obvious cause of death in the game is from the injuries sustained in combat. The stronger the opponent is, the more health points they can take with a single attack. If you run into such an opponent unprepared, you can die from a single hit.

However, fighting is not the only way to lose your life. You can also die by:

  1. Smoke - when you put a campfire inside a building, it will start to build up smoke. If you don't have a chimney, the smoke will gradually fill the entire space. This will cause the room to run out of oxygen – your character will suffocate;
  2. Falling from a height - if you are building a tall structure, you may need to use an elevation. If you fall off it, you can lose all your HP;

  1. Drowning - your character is quite vulnerable to water. If you fall into a deep tank, you can swim until your stamina bar is depleted. Then you will begin to gradually lose health. You can still move, but if you don't make it to the shore, you will die;
  2. Crushing - objects falling down, such as a fallen tree, can also kill. If you're busy with logging, one mistake and your character can get killed;
  3. Poisoning - if your opponent has the ability to emit toxins (e.g. Blob living in Swamps), then they can inflict poisoned status that takes away a specific number of health points for a certain amount of time;
  4. Freezing - in the mountains, you will gradually lose health without proper attire or potions. This process will continue until you leave the area or die.
