Valheim: Ships - list; how to build? Valheim guide, walkthrough
Last update: 09 April 2021
On this page of the Valheim game guide, we list all the ships available in the game, the resources necessary to build them and ways to ensure that they don't get destroyed. In Valheim, travelling by sea is virtually impossible without the use of ships. The player character can swim, but it depletes their stamina and once it runs out, they will start losing health until they get out of the water or die. The following list will help you decide which mode of transportation you should use.
Raft
The first and most basic means of maritime transportation. It's only worth building when the journey is absolutely necessary and access to bronze or fine wood is limited or impossible. Out of all the ships, it has the lowest speed, hit points and number of seats, and it has no storage slots.
Required materials:
- Wood x20
- Leather scraps x6
- Resin x10
Karve
A medium-sized boat that works well in most situations. Its base statistics might suggest that it's inferior to the Longboat, but nothing could be further from the truth. The small size of this ship makes it easier to find a convenient place to dock and the chances of the boat being destroyed by strong waves (or colliding with the shore or rocks, for example) are decreased. Also, if the ship is destroyed in an unfortunate accident, you'll lose relatively easily accessible resources. The Karve has a small cargo hold containing 4 item slots, allowing it to carry a small shipment.
Required materials:
- Fine wood x30
- Deer hide x10
- Resin x20
- Bronze nails x80
Longship
It's the largest, fastest and most durable ship in Valheim and it also boasts the largest cargo hold. It owes these advantages to its size, which in itself isn't always beneficial. You'll also need a large amount of uncommon materials to build it, so losing it can be quite painful. Still, this iconic Viking boat represents the pinnacle of maritime logistics technology in Valheim. The cargo hold has room for up to 18 different items, making the Longship the superior choice for carrying large amounts of goods. Additionally, the ship provides enough room for a group of 10 people to board at once, making it easier to fight sea monsters. This amount of space also facilitates the transport of domesticated animals.
Required materials:
- Fine wood x40
- Ancient bark x40
- Deer hide x10
- Iron nails x100
Boat construction and protection
To build a boat, in addition to the necessary materials and a Hammer, you will need to be within the range of a Workbench. Once you equip the hammer, go to the "Miscellaneous" tab and then select the correct boat from the list. The boat can be built anywhere, but keep in mind that if you build it on land, trying to push it into water may end up destroying it.
Fortunately, like most buildable items in the game, once the boat is destroyed, it will leave behind all the materials used to craft it. If the boat is destroyed in the water, keep in mind that the heavier materials, such as nails or leather, will sink to the bottom, making them irretrievable as it is impossible to dive in this game.
You might even consider building a makeshift dock to prevent your boat from crashing into rocks or shoals during high tides. This will provide easy access to a boat left in deeper water.
