Silent Hill 2 Remake focuses mainly on atmosphere and exploration and is mechanically a fairly simple game without any complex mechanics. Some of its elements may still be quite unclear at first. On this page of the guide we have listed some starting tips that should help you when starting the game.

Listen to the radio

The radio is a mandatory item that you will obtain in the first area of the game. The streets of Silent Hill are shrouded in fog, which significantly reduces your visibility. The radio therefore plays a key role, because it starts to crackle and make characteristic sounds when an enemy is nearby. As long as you are listening to the radio, no one should surprise you.

You don't have to fight all the enemies

Enemies in the game do not drop ammo or healing items. The only reward for defeating an enemy is removing them from the path. Sometimes it's better to completely avoid an opponent than risk losing health in combat. Remember this especially outside buildings, when traversing the streets of Silent Hill, which are wide enough to easily go around opponents.

Save your ammunition at the beginning of the game

Ammo is quite rare, but fortunately you don't have to use firearms often. Most enemies in the game can be easily defeated in melee combat in a one-on-one confrontation. You should therefore save your ammunition for boss fights, tougher opponents such as the iron-studded Lying Figures from Blue Creek Apartments (they spit acid upon death, causing damage if you are close) or for crisis situations, e.g. fighting several enemies at once in a confined space. Even then, you often only need to shoot once - landing a melee blow right after the shot can knock the opponent down, allowing you to finish them off with a stomp.

Start using firearms more often in later areas

The further you progress in the game, the more common ammo becomes. By the time you start at Brookhaven Hospital, you should have enough handgun ammo to be able to take out enemies from a distance more often. Remember this especially when fighting nurses, who are resilient and very dangerous, but can be quite easily killed with three shots from the handgun to the head or one shot from the shotgun at close range. The handgun will be one of your main tools against regular enemies, save the shotgun for close-quarter situations, while the rifle is best saved for bosses at the end of the game.

Break the windows

After acquiring your first weapon, which happens automatically when you find the radio, you will gain the ability to break windows. By doing that, you can access some buildings and rooms or acquire items lying behind glass.

Drink healing medicines

There are two types of healing items in the game - potions and syringes. They are the only way of healing in the entire game. Syringes are rare, but potions are fairly common as long as you explore carefully, and they are enough to heal most wounds (red edges of the screen). Don't be afraid to use them.

Finish off enemies with a kick

Enemies you encounter will fall onto their backs after a few hits. You should then approach them and attack them in melee until James finishes them off with a kick. In this way, you will kill the enemy and save on ammunition.

Save the game often

While traveling around Silent Hill, you will come across red squares. These are save points, where you can save your progress. Use them at every opportunity to avoid risking losing progress.

Remember about the map

You will usually find location maps right by the entrance to such a place. James automatically marks important places and objects on maps. Locations that you need to visit to proceed are marked on the map with a circle. After completing the location, i.e. once you get what you need, James will automatically check it off. If you get lost or are unsure where to go next, it's worth checking the map. Make sure there are no enemies nearby though, as using the map does not pause the game.
