NieR Automata: PS4, PS4 Pro and PS5 editions
- On a regular PS4, the game works in 900p resolution and aims to display animations in 60 frames per second. This works well most of the time, but sometimes the game may experience frame drop, e.g. during larger fights.
- On PS4 Pro, the game received a special patch. It raises the resolution to 1080p and provides a more stable 60 FPS. Additional improvements have been made to the shadows and lighting, which makes the game look a little nicer.
- NieR Automata works on PS5 in the backwards compatibility mode. The game received no next-gen patch and works identically to the PS4 Pro version, i.e. at 1080p 60fps. Unfortunately, loading times have not been shortened either. On top of that, there are minor compatibility issues and the game can freeze from time to time, especially when you're traveling around the game world.
NieR Automata: online mode
You can complete the entirety of Nier Automata in singleplayer mode, but it also has Network features which you can include optionally. They add the ability to find bodies of other fallen players in the game world, which allows you to acquire some small loot or get a temporary helper.
We described the network features in more detail in a separate Social elements section in this guide.
NieR Automata: The game freezes - what to do?
- Freezing and lags can be particularly annoying in NieR Automata, because the game does not create any save files automatically. No matter what hardware you play on and how stable the game is for you, it's still worth making a habit of saving the game progress manually. This will save you from losing large parts of the progress, and in the worst case, you will have to replay "only" from a few to a dozen last minutes.
- The game can lag on PC and unfortunately, there is no universal solution to this problem. Of course, make sure to update the game to the latest version and install the latest drivers. You may also want to consider choosing lower graphics settings to try and reduce the system load.
- The PS4 and PS4 Pro editions are the most stable. You shouldn't have any major problems with the game's performance on these consoles.
- Playing Nier Automata on PS5 , however, you may unfortunately still experience some game lags. This can happen at random moments, as well as during specific quests. Be sure to save the game often and in case of encountering a problematic task, try to change up your actions a little the next time you try to complete it.
