God of War: PS5 God of War Guide and Walkthrough
Last update: 19 August 2022
This page of the guide contains information about playing God of War on the PS5 console. We've included information about the visual improvements to the PlayStation 5 version and whether the next gen patch for God of War on PlayStation 5 will be available for free.
God of War was originally released on April 20, 2018 and was initially only available on PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles. Starting with the release of the PS5 console, God of War can also be played on that console in backwards compatibility mode.
On February 2, 2021, a fully-fledged next-gen patch (a patch with extended support for the next generation of PlayStation consoles) was released with PS5 console users in mind. This update is free for all owners of God of War on PS4. PlayStation 5 console owners do not need to spend any additional money to upgrade their copy of the game to the PS5 version.
When God of War is updated for PlayStation 5 consoles, there are two graphics modes available:
- The first mode prioritizes graphics quality and allows you to play at 30 fps at the maximum supported resolution.
- The second mode prioritizes animation fluidity and allows you to play at 60 frames per second at a slightly lower resolution.
- The PS5 version can run at 4K resolution, and this was achieved with checkerboard rendering technology.
