God of War: Character progression - Atreus & Kratos God of War Guide and Walkthrough

This section of our guide contains the most important information regarding Kratos' character progression system in God of War. We've covered Kratos' main stats, how to increase the effectiveness of Atreus' attacks, and how to upgrade the main character's weapons.
Kratos stats
Kratos has six different statistics:
- Strength - increases damage dealt by all regular attacks.
- Runic - increases damage dealt by using runic attacks and elements.
- Defence - reduces received damage.
- Vitality - increases the maximum amount of health.
- Luck - increases your chance to activate various effects. Increases gained XP and Hacksilver.
- Cooldown - reduces cooldown time for runic attacks, summons and talismans.
Each part of your equipment makes changes to the main stats of your hero. Developing Kratos is done by changing and upgrading his equipment. In addition, if you want to develop a particular attribute (e.g. Strength) you can look for items and upgrades that are related to it. Experience points are only for buying new skills.
Upgrading weapons
- At certain points in the game, you will be able to upgrade your weapon at the dwarves' shop. Some upgrades are related to the story, e.g. when Sindri strengthens your weapon in-between quests.
- Battles with the Trolls are important here - defeating them can reward you with valuable materials that can be used in upgrading a weapon which, in turn, makes Kratos even more powerful.
Upgrading Atreus
- Remember that Atreus accompanies you all the time. At first, the boy won't be that useful. However, the boy will later become a powerful archer.
- Always try to get buy better equipment for the boy - upgrading his bow and getting a better quiver are your priority.
- Later, you will unlock armors for Atreus that increase his combat potential. Don't save your money on upgrading Atreus - he is really worth investing XP and Hacksilver.
