Call of Duty Video Game Series
Call of Duty
Call of Duty is a series of first-person shooters (FPS), the individual parts of which are set in different conventions of armed conflicts - from World War II, through modern wars, to futuristic conflicts. The series is considered one of the most important and popular brands in the history of electronic entertainment.
Overview of the Call of Duty series
The first part of the series, namely Call of Duty, debuted on personal computers in October 2003.. It was intended to be Activision's answer to the success of the series published by Electronic Arts Medal of Honor. Work on the game was entrusted to the Infinity Ward studio, founded by 22 members of the development team of 2015, Inc. (producer of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault). The game's excellent reception among critics and players resulted in a sequel released two years later (Call of Duty 2), which hit both personal computers and consoles. Thus was born a series that is still developed today not only by Infinity Ward, but also by a number of other development studios, led by Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software.
The first parts of the series were closely linked to the theme of World War II and were fictionalized reconstructions of many key military operations, showing the conflict from different perspectives (including those of British, American, Soviet and Polish soldiers). The breakthrough came with the 2007 release Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the action of which was set in modern times. Since then, the series has also moved to the realities of the Cold War, with the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) or Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War (2020), and has even taken players into the future, including in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (2014) i Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (2016).
Special features of selected games in the Call of Duty series
The common denominator of the games in the series Call of Duty is the ability to take on the role of infantry soldiers and special units. Some productions from under this banner stand out from others due to unique elements. Call of Duty: World at War (2008) introduced a multiplayer Zombies mode, in which players cooperate, eliminating hordes of the living dead; over time it also found its way into other parts of the series, becoming its integral element. Released in 2013, the game Call of Duty: Ghosts brought the first playable animal in the history of the series, a German Shepherd named Riley. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare boasted an all-star cast, with Kevin Spacey and Troy Baker playing the lead roles. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII (2018), on the other hand, completely abandoned the story campaign in favor of a multiplayer battle royale mode (dubbed Blackout). Meanwhile, 2016 brought the release of the first remaster in the brand's history, namely. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, which was followed four years later by a refreshed version of the second installment of the series. In 2019, however, the series lived to see its first reboot, i.e. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which used a new engine developed by Kraków-based Infinity Ward. Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War on the other hand, brought the ability to create your own character and make story choices.
Side parts of the Call of Duty series
In addition to the large, main installments, over the years the series has lived to see not only special versions of individual games, which were created with specific platforms in mind, but also various spin-offs. Among the latter, the leading games are Call of Duty: Warzone (2020) i Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 (2022), based on battle royale principles, as well as Call of Duty: Mobile (2019) i Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile (2024), developed for smartphones and tablets.
Other information about the Call of Duty series
Huge popularity among gamers at one time prompted the publisher to launch a network service Call of Duty: Elite, aimed at users of personal computers, desktop consoles (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) and mobile devices (smartphones, tablets). The platform, developed by Beachhead Studios, provided DLC and community support. In 2014, the service was shut down and its function was taken over by a dedicated mobile app.
By October 2023, Activision had sold more than 425 million copies of games under the banner of Call of Duty. In addition, by the end of 2022, the series brought the publisher $30 billion in revenue. In addition, every year the series is becoming more and more popular in the esports scene. Also noteworthy is the fact that the producers of the brand have repeatedly taken steps to support war veterans.

The first installment in one of the most popular series of first-person shooters, created by Infinity Ward. The game takes the player to several different front lines of the Second World War. Throughout 24 missions divided into four single player campaigns, the player assumes the roles of several allied soldiers. The list includes an American paratrooper, a British commando and a Soviet infantryman. The missions bring great amounts of action and diversity as well. The player participates in the biggest battles of World War II, including mainly the Normandy landings, Battles of Stalingrad and Berlin, as well as tactical operations involving sabotage. Apart from that, the game offers several multiplayer modes. Call of Duty faithfully recreates the historical background - the player can find a set of authentic weapons and vehicles represented in the game. The places and major events were recreated in accordance with actual history as well. Call of Duty utilizes a modified version of the id Tech 3 graphical engine, used previously in Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Call of Duty: Siege
Strategy
cancelled
A strategy game with card game elements, created by an in-house studio of Activision. The story takes place in the same universe as Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, connecting some of the threads left out by the game. The players assume the role of a captain of the Retribution, a star cruiser in service of United Nations Space Alliance. The organization suffered serious territorial loses to rebel forces. Our task is to stop the rebellion, and stop the conflict from escalating further. The gameplay in Call of Duty: Siege mainly consists of storming enemy bases, implemented in form of inverted tower defense mechanics. The summoned units approach the objective using the shortest way possible, and our only method of intervention is using special ability cards, so the choice of the drop point is crucial. During the game, we slowly build a deck of offensive cards, representing heroes, mechs, and flying machines. In order to facilitate the defense of the controlled territory, we employ a defense-focused deck. Aside from the single player campaign, the title has a competition-oriented multiplayer mode, and the ability to create and join guilds, which are known as Alliances in the game's universe.
