Taking over outposts | Basics Far Cry Primal Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
Taking over an enemy outpost can give Takkar experience, villagers, fast travel location, resources or rewards. The amount of experience points you'll get depends on your methods - taking over an outpost without being detected is the most effective one.
Before approaching an outpost, consider using an owl. This way, you can tag enemies, perform a recon, find horns and (perhaps) captured Wenja (if you free them, they will help you fight). If you unlock some abilities, you can use the owl for your first attack (like dropping bombs).
If it's your first attempt, try to stay undetected. If it fails, call strong animals, but in the beginning, try to use a jaguar - it's stealthy and it cat eliminate designated enemies.
Before the attack, minimize the risk of reinforcements. They can be called with a horn located in the outpost or when you are detected by an enemy who carries a horn. The first type can be disabled. You can do it by either coming close to it or, preferably, by shooting it with a bow. With a long bow, accuracy should not be a problem.
Enemies capable of calling reinforcements are tagged with a horn icon. You can often find them on platforms, near the entrance to the outpost.
Heavy enemies can cause a lot of trouble as well. They can kill Takkar in open combat fairly quickly. The best way to get rid of them is to sneak up on them and perform a takedown (you need a Heavy Takedown skill). Throwing a sting bomb near such an enemy and finishing him with a spear is effective too.
If your character is weak and you can't handle a heavy enemy, outsmart him. Using the Berserk Shard, or the Berserk Bomb later in the game, will let you make the enemy go insane without even touching him (you can drop the bomb with the owl if you buy corresponding upgrades). He will start attacking everyone around him. Because of the strength and resistance of heavy units, there is a chance that he will kill everyone around him and then die (the poison kills after some time).
You can use various methods while taking over outposts, but the most effective one is staying undetected, crouching, and eliminating the enemies systematically. Keeping a distance and using hills are to your advantage - the enemies can be seen clearly, while you can hide and move around to retreat.
You can use other animals, too. Mammoths are definitely the best at it - if you ride one into the enemies, you will succeed at taking over outposts, even if they are heavily guarded. The downside to this solution is a high chance of triggering an alarm, and therefore getting less experience points.
The outposts contain cages with wild animals. Destroying its door with a bow will free the animal, which will probably kill the nearby enemies. Setting a larger area on fire can sometimes be effective as well.
To sum up, outposts can be captured in many ways, but stealth is the best solution. You can eliminate weaker enemies and horns with a bow and then enter the camp to get rid of the rest. Stay away from regular combat, because the element of surprise gives you an advantage.
