Hunting | Basics Far Cry Primal Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
The game introduces you to the hunting mechanics in the very beginning. It is one of the most important ways of acquiring the resources - meat and skins. To get them, kill an animal and skin it. You can check the general locations where specific animals can be found on the map of Oros, but sometimes you still have to look for them. If you can't find any animal, try going to a different place or get some sleep and visit the area again.
Hunting can be divided into two categories: hunting timid animals and hunting the predators. The first one contains, for example, goats or deer. They pose no threat, but escape really fast as soon as they see Takkar. The best way of hunting them is with your bow - one shot to the head should be enough to kill them - in case of larger animals like yaks, it should at least injure them.
An animal will start running away when it's injured - to find it, use your hunter vision. If the damage was high, the prey will die after a few meters. In case of tougher animals, they will probably survive and stop running after some time.
Hunting becomes easier after taming some animals to help you, especially fast predators are useful, but even a wolf can be helpful while hunting weaker animals. To tame a beast, you need a bait and a corresponding skill. Using your animals to attack your prey is really effective and it will help you collect skins fairly quickly.
You can use bait while fighting predators, even if you don't want to tame it (it will be distracted by the meat and stop its attacks). Predators often attack leaping at you, so a melee weapon upgrade will be useful. Jaguars and leopards are not that tough so you may hunt them yourself, but if you want to tame or kill bears, cave lions or tigers, having a beast and baits is essential. Killing such an animal will require more effort. If it's possible, attack from a distance to minimize the risk.
To sum up, there are several methods of hunting - from stealthy ranged attacks to open combat, setting traps and summoning a beast. Try to kill animals and collect skins from the very beginning, because later you will find out that you have already collected resources required for upgrades. Try to buy Skinning I and Skinning II upgrades as early as possible, since they will let you collect more resources.
