How to tame animals? | FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions Far Cry Primal Guide

Taming animals is a skill which Takkar will obtain rather quickly. However, at first it won't give him much. Remember about developing that skill. This will allow you to tame better and stronger animals. It will make completing many missions easier. After combining the taming with Beast rider skill you will be able to move through Oros much faster.
You must have a bait in order to tame an animal. Once you have it, find the animal that you want to tame (it depends on skill from the Beast Master branch) and throw the bait close to it. If the animal walks towards the bait and starts eating, you will have a moment to get close and tame it (by holding the taming button). You will be safe for some time as the animal that is eating will not attack you. Additionally, if you see an untamed animal for the first time, Takkar will inform you about that.
An animal that was once tamed can be summoned almost any time (except for some locations). You simply have to select your pupil from the menu and call it. If the animal is alive, it won't cost you a thing. If the animal was killed, you must use red leafs to call (resurrect) the animal. If an animal is wounded, you can heal it during a limited period of time by walking towards it and giving it a piece of meat. Sending away and calling living animals doesn't cost you any leafs.
Notice what abilities the animals have. Strength informs you about their attack and resistance, speed determines their movement. The more stealth, the harder it will be for enemies to detect the animal. Because of that, jaguar is best for silent tasks while cave bear will be perfect in direct combat. Keep attention to special abilities (like marking the nearby enemies) and invulnerability to fire of rare animal species.
You can give simple commands to the animals. In order to do so, you must select a location and order the animal to walk there. If you target the enemy or another animal, your pet will attack it. Watch out, as if the enemy detects the animal, he will also detect Takkar. So bear in mind to select proper animal for silent elimination (like the already mentioned jaguar).
