Changes in the bestiary | Additional novelties of The Following Dying Light: The Following Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
In general, The Following uses the same monsters as the original game; however, there are several changes that you should draw attention to. To start with, Crane will encounter elite variations of well-known zombies from the very beginning, and thus it is crucial that you have already finished the main campaign, and are aware how dangerous certain species can be and how to effectively deal with them.
Changes among "the old monsters" include Bolters. In the original game, these monsters appeared at night only. In The Following you can actually encounter them at day-time and as before they are marked with a special icon on the world map. The most effective way to deal with "Daily Bolters" is to run them over with your car. All you have to do is to catch up with the monster and run it over (try not to hit any indestructible obstacles). Another method is to sneak up on them and take them down with a compound crossbow. Should you decide to pick the latter option, remember to aim for the head.
Further changes have been implemented in the locations of Volatile Hives, where new monsters are spawned. Clearing the hive means that, from now on, around the given area, you will be running into less monsters, where they are not easy to reach. DO NOT ATTEMPT entering hives during the day, because this is when the strongest monsters stay there (mainly hunters). Instead try destroying hives during the night, - wait for the time of the day to change around the hive, or speed up time while in a safe zone. Before you set out for a hive, make sure that Crane is sufficiently developed and that he has supplies that will let him survive, in the case of being spotted prematurely. This is important, because the hive will be completely empty and unguarded.
During the exploration of the hive, you need to remember two things. Firstly, you need to make it before the daylight, because hunters and other elite monsters will then return to the hive. Secondly, your priority is to find monsters that are responsible for spawning new infested. Killing them withholds production in the hive and this will be equal to securing it.
Note - If you noticed that the monster responsible for spawning zombies is "protected" by more powerful foes (like the Toad), you can kill him from a safe distance. A bow or a crossbow will be the most effective, as it allows you to stay hidden even when attacking. 2 or 3 headshots using the said weapons and the enemy should be dead.
The Following offers unique and extremely powerful monsters called Freaks of Nature. Each monster has its unique name (e.g. Thor) and a life bar visible on the screen. Killing one of them is a big challenge, even for a well-developed character. Before you attack such a monster, make sure that you are well-equipped in terms of weapons and medicaments.
