How does the co-op mode work in Division 2? The Division 2 guide, tips

Last update: 26 March 2019

Even though Tom Clancy's The Division 2 can be played solo (as explained in our chapter "Can you play The Division 2 solo?"), co-op gameplay, in a well-coordinated team, significantly enhances the fun of the game, as well as speeds up the development of the character. From this chapter you will learn how the cooperative mode in The Division 2 works.

Increasing the experience points and loot gains

The general principle is as follows - the more players are on the team, the more experience points you will receive for eliminating enemies. This also increases the quality and/or quantity of loot acquired from defeated enemies. However, this is also associated with side effects.

Increasing the durability and power of enemies

One of the main disadvantages of playing in a group is the increase of enemies durability. While playing solo, a short series from an assault rifle or a single, accurate shot from a sniper rifle will be enough to take down most regular enemies. This is, however, not the case while playing in a team - with two people in a party, the enemies will only be slightly more durable, but with four it will take a lot more effort to gun someone down. The situation looks similar when it comes to the damage they inflict - while playing alone, your character might withstand even a dozen hits, but in a four-man squad some enemies might take you out with a single hit.

What are the effects of level differences between party members?

But what will happen when there are characters with different experience levels in the same party? Does that mean that some players will be bored due to the lack of challenge and experience gains, while others will struggle to just stay alive and not get killed due to getting hit once? Fortunately that is not the case, as there is level scaling implemented in the game. Generally, the system works in the following way:

  • The character level in the group is scaled up to the player with the highest individual level. If, for instance, there are four players in the team with levels 20, 22, 23 and 24, the players with levels 20, 22 and 23 will have their level scaled up to level 24. All their stats - damage, health, armor - will be raised accordingly to reflect the state in which they would be at that level.
  • All of the enemies you will encounter will be scaled to the level of the character with the highest individual level in the party.
  • Every player will acquire gear adjusted to his/her character level. The player on level 20 will receive items for level 20, the player on level 22 will acquire items for level 22 and so on.
  • Experience points will be gained in the amount corresponding to the original character levels - as if they were playing in the team with the same level as the one their character has.

Thanks to this one simple mechanic, players with different experience levels will be able to play with each other without worrying about losing experience points or the game becoming too hard or too easy.

Note - even though the levels and the stats of the character will be properly scaled up, the character with low enough level will still be less effective due to the unlocked abilities and/or its upgrades, talents and the rank of the equipment. This is why it is not worth to join a level 30 party as a level 5 character, as the game will still be extremely difficult.
