This page of the Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy game guide features a detailed explanation of all the choices in Chapter 8 - The Matriarch. You will find out when you will have to make key decisions and you will learn their long-term consequences.
For obvious reasons, the following description of the choices in Chapter 8 contains spoilers. Nevertheless, we've tried not to describe events in too much detail, and have instead focused our attention on the possible choices.
- Distracting Raker - successful or failed drone hacking
- Hidden ending - flashback with Meredith and adult Peter
- Gamora - letting her pursue Raker or following her
Distracting Raker - successful or failed drone hacking
Grand Unifier Raker is the character you'll meet at the very start of Chapter 8. With him, you need to head to the meeting place with the Matron.
You will have to make a relatively important choice soon after you start riding on the mobile platform with Raker. Rocket will ask you to distract the Great Unifier so that he can attempt to hack the flying drone behind his back.
Your task is to choose the correct option three times:
When faced with the first choice, select the left dialog option - Feign Interest.
During the second choice, select the left dialog option - Something About Him?
Select the right dialog option during the third choice - Fake Heart Attack.
If you chose all the correct options, Rocket will remain unnoticed until he manages to successfully hack the drone.
If you have selected at least one incorrect dialog option, then Raker will notice Rocket, order him to jump off the drone and, as a result, the hacking attempt will fail.
Unfortunately, successfully hacking the drone won't significantly affect the progress of the game. The only difference occurs later during this stage, specifically once you reach the room with a group of opponents transmitting energy. Your task will be to locate the exit from this room. You won't be able to defeat all of the opponents in this location, as reinforcements will constantly spawn.
If you've hacked the drone correctly, it will fly towards the exit and show it to you. If you failed the hacking attempt, you won't get this hint. Fortunately, this isn't a big issue, because the exit is always in the same location and we have marked it in the above screenshot. It's best to head there immediately without trying to fight any of the opponents.
Hidden ending - flashback with Meredith and adult Peter
The last flashback plays shortly after your encounter with the Matron. You will be playing as adult Peter and initially, you'll have to deal with the opponents attacking Meredith. Use the blasters here.
As soon as you win the battle, you will be faced with a choice. The first option involves playing out the events according to plan, starting with hugging the main character's mother.
Additional scenes will play out, during which you will be able to visit the Quill family home again and interact with the other Guardians of the Galaxy residing in the house. At the same time, the edges of the screen will become increasingly distorted, signaling that something is wrong.
Once enough time has passed, Peter will end up fully enslaved and the end credits will be displayed. You can confirm your willingness to accept the Promise to unlock the unofficial hidden ending (unfortunately, this won't earn you any additional trophies or unique rewards) or choose to rethink your choices and restart the farmhouse "visit" scene.
The second option requires you to see through the illusion and realise that the main character is being subjected to a gradual "brainwashing". After defeating the group of opponents, aim your blasters at Meredith and continue shooting. Finally, press the interact button. By turning against Meredith, you will successfully complete this scene, which is required to further progress the main story.
Gamora - letting her pursue Raker or following her
In the final part of the eighth chapter, you will reach the location where Raker appears on a distant balcony. Gamora will want to go after him so she can deal with him alone.
The first option is the more obvious course of action as well as the better choice. In this option, you let Gamora head out on her own. Simply avoid any activities that involve chasing after her and instead focus on attacking the new enemies appearing nearby with the rest of your group.
The decision described above has several important consequences:
- Until you reach Chapter 9, you will have fewer team members to lead, i.e. you'll have to manage without Gamora. You'll take part in numerous battles in the meantime, but none of these will involve fighting bosses.
- Gamora will return at the beginning of Chapter 9 (screenshot no. 1) - she will unexpectedly appear on the Milano. You will learn that she failed to kill Raker, but she was able to remove one of his limbs.
- The most important change is that, thanks to Gamora's help, Raker will be weakened. The confrontation against Raker occurs in Chapter 15 (screenshot no. 2). The boss will not be able to replace the lost limb and, as a result, the fight against him won't be as difficult. Raker is the "unofficial" final boss, so being able to weaken him is a great help.
The second option involves ignoring Gamora's wish to let her face Raker alone. Run after her while ignoring the enemies who have set up in the area.
During the chase sequence, an explosion will occur and the Star-Lord will require help. Gamora will give up chasing after Raker and instead will help the protagonist. She'll also be mad at the Star-Lord for not listening to her.
If you select the second choice, the confrontation with Raker in Chapter 15 will be more difficult, because Gamora didn't have the chance to remove one of his limbs.
