Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is an action adventure game by Eidos Montreal studio telling the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy. We play as Peter "Star Lord" Quill and together with Rocket, Groot, Gamora and Drax we go on another crazy mission.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is an action adventure game with RPG elements, based on the license of Guardians of the Galaxy brand owned by Marvel. It was developed by Eidos Montreal studio, which is known for such projects as Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and was published by Square Enix.
Plot
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy takes us on a journey to the science fiction universe known from the comic book original. A few years ago the whole galaxy was shaken by a gigantic war, the effects of which are still felt today. As it turns out, however, its problems do not end there. As a result of a series of catastrophic events, another interplanetary crisis appeared.
As you can guess, only the Guardians, led by the main character Peter "Star Lord" Quill, can cope with the upcoming problems. Along with Groot, Gamora, Draks and Rocket, the protagonist goes on a journey during which the whole team will face many threats and get into many troubles. The game is characterised by a powerful dose of humour.
Gameplay
In Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy we observe the action from a third person perspective (TPP). During the game we play as Star Lord only, and we travel through colorful, diverse levels, talk and fight.
On our way we often face enemies which we eliminate by using elemental pistols and protagonist's jet boots. Apart from that, during clashes we give orders to other team members and pointing out the targets on which they are to use their special attacks. During the battle we can motivate other Guardians, giving them various buffs, such as faster cooldowns of certain abilities or the strengthening of attacks. On our way we face both regular opponents and powerful bosses.
As we progress, we gain experience points and acquire more special abilities for both Star-Lord and the other members of the team. We also acquire parts to purchase various upgrades. In addition, the game often gives us the possibility to select the dialogue, which affects the relationships between the characters, and sometimes also determines the course of the story - although the game has an essentially linear structure, and the story moves towards a single, predetermined ending.
Technical aspects
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy features high-quality graphics. The detailed and richly animated characters are especially impressive, but the varied and rich locations are also very appealing.
It's worth noting that Guardians and their adventures are not a copy of the comic book or movie originals, but their new interpretation. This also applies to the look of the characters, so we won't find any actors from Marvel movies here. This is complemented by the soundtrack, which includes hits from the 1980s, from artists and bands such as Pat Benatar, Wham!, Iron Maiden, KISS or Blondie.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
With an original cast and storyline, the video game version of Guardians of the Galaxy rivals that of the movies. But what parts of it are cinematic and where does it fall short? Read our review.

The main pros of the game
- Engaging Story and Characters: Many reviewers praised the game's narrative, character development, and humor, highlighting that the writing captures the essence of the Guardians' universe. The interactions between characters are noted as particularly entertaining, with a lot of witty dialogue.
- Visuals and Audio: The graphics are described as beautiful, with good attention to detail, lighting, and textures. The soundtrack, featuring classic tunes, adds to the overall experience and is well-received by players.
- Fun Gameplay Mechanics: Players enjoyed the combat mechanics, especially the ability to control other Guardians during battles, making for a chaotic yet entertaining experience. The "Huddle" mechanic was also appreciated for adding a unique element to combat.
- Immersive Experience: The game is compared to a movie experience, with cinematic storytelling and direction that keeps players engaged throughout the gameplay.
The main cons of the game
- Bugs and Technical Issues: Several users reported encountering minor bugs, including game-breaking glitches, audio issues, and visual stuttering. Some players noted having to restart from checkpoints due to these bugs.
- Repetitive Combat: While the combat is generally fun, many reviewers mentioned that it can become monotonous over time, with a lack of enemy variety leading to repetitive encounters.
- Cutscene and Quick-Time Events: Some players expressed frustration with the frequency of unskippable cutscenes and quick-time events, feeling that they detracted from the gameplay experience.
- Limited Playable Characters: The fact that players can only control Star-Lord and not the other Guardians was a common point of criticism, with some wishing for more character variety in gameplay.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Manual Save Options: Players expressed a desire for manual saves and save slots, as the current autosave and checkpoint system can sometimes lead to lost progress or missed content.
- More Depth in Combat: Some users felt that the combat system lacked depth and could benefit from additional mechanics to keep it varied and engaging throughout the game.
- Improved Dialogue Management: There were complaints about overlapping dialogue during battles, which could be overwhelming and disrupt immersion.
- Greater Exploration Freedom: A few users mentioned wanting more opportunities for exploration and backtracking to collect missed items or achievements.
Summary
- Overall, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is well-received for its engaging story, character interactions, and visuals, but it does have its share of technical issues and gameplay limitations that some players found frustrating.
