Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Launch Sales Disappoint Square Enix
High ratings didn't help Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at launch. The game's initial sales fell below Square Enix's expectations.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy didn't sell as well on release as Square Enix had hoped. That's the information that came out in an outline of the publisher's earnings presentation from the three quarters of fiscal year 2022 (i.e., from July 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022).
As we read on page 3 of the document, the work of Eidos Montreal launched to very positive reviews but this did not translate into the game's popularity. At least at first, because subsequent "sales initiatives" by Square Enix greatly improved the situation, and the company intends to continue this strategy to make up for the game's poor launch.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - a repeat of Tomb Raider?
It was not stated exactly how many copies of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy have been shipped to stores or reached purchasers. "Poor" result of the game may be surprising, considering that it quickly hit the world bestseller lists. Indeed, some gamers doubted the success of Square Enix's next game adaptation based on Marvel's comics after the - to be fair - failure of Marvel's Avengers and that may have translated into sales of the virtual Guardians of the Galaxy.
- Some Internet users are wondering if we are accidentally dealing with a similar situation as in 2013. At the time Square Enix reported that sales of Tomb Raider fell below the publisher's expectations.
- The problem is that this title not only had the best launch in the history of the entire series (the first million copies were purchased within 48 hours, and 3.4 million copies were sold after a month). It is also the best-selling Tomb Raider of all time, as admitted by Square Enix itself last year.
Is it not the same in the case of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy? Perhaps we will find out after the publication of Square Enix's full financial results.
