Set pieces | Tactics Football Manager 2016 Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
Set pieces are an element of the tactics that is often neglected. However, devoting enough attention to them when playing against a team of similar level can decide whether you win or lose. Set pieces are divided according to the side on which they take place and the scenario (defense/attack). You can create multiple strategies and enable them before every match. You can also change them during the game.
When assigning players to strategies, remember that their attributes should match the role that they're going to play (whether they pass, shoot or throw the ball).
Corners
Most important attributes: Corners, Crossing, Passing, Technique
When it comes to corners, you can choose the side from which a given player will execute a set piece. The stronger leg of a player defines whether he will cross towards the goal or outwards. Therefore, you can choose different players for each side. Select the crossing mode in which the player passes the ball to the tallest teammates with the best heading. If the players from the opposite team are taller, it will be better to perform a short pass.
Free kicks
Most important attributes: Free Kick Taking, Crossing, Passing, Long Shots, Technique
In the case of free kicks, you can also select the side from which a set piece is executed. Players with their right leg better will do best on the left side and the right side will be suitable for players that favorize their left leg (you can assign different players to each side). During short distance free kicks, the player will most probably try to shoot and when there is a longer distance to the goal, he will pass. Encourage your players to pass to teammates with the best Heading. Select a player with low Heading attribute to draw the attention of players in the wall, which can increase the chance of success.
Throw-ins
Most important attributes: Long Throws, Balance, Strength
Throw-ins should be arranged according to your strategy. If you prefer to perform quick counter-attacks, don't hold back the attack and select quick throws. If you have a player who is a good thrower, you can select long shots.
Penalty kicks
Most important attributes: Penalty Taking, Finishing, Composure
The only thing that you can do when it comes to penalty kicks is choosing the executer. The candidates are listed according to attributes important when taking a penalty kick. Make sure that you select several players so that there is always someone to do the job.
