Last update: 26 July 2023
Root Mantis is the first boss you'll encounter during the tutorial. On this page we explain how to fight it, what rewards it drops and what its moveset is.
Root Mantis - boss description
The boss is very agile, fast, and has long blades for arms giving it plenty of melee range. Not only that, it has ranged attacks too. Thankfully, you fight it alongside three AI allies, which serve as a good distraction and should keep you relatively safe.
List of moves
- Wide slash - Root Mantis raises both arms, crossing its blades, then dashes forward a bit, slashing once.
- Charge - the boss can charge directly at the character it's targeting. It's not a fast move, looking more as if it's trudging towards its enemy.
- Two-hit dash combo - attacks horizontally, then raises its blade and slashes vertically. When the blade falls, it jumps towards you to shorten the distance.
- Projectile - when the boss stops moving and red goo starts gathering near its eye, it means it's winding up a ranged projectile.
- Dodging - when you start aiming at the boss, it will respond with rapid side dodging.
How to fight Root Mantis?
You can't really prepare for this fight, as it is part of the tutorial. The boss itself is pretty simple, doesn't have many attacks and can't really surprise you with anything. You also fight it four on one, assisted by AI allies.
The boss' weak spot is its red eye. Firing at it deals more damage, so aim at it whenever you can.
Its attacks are predictable, and usually a properly timed dodge will be enough to get you out of the harm's way. If it starts charging at you, fire away at it until it gets close. If he's very close, dodge to the side.
To beat him easily, don't attack him for a while to let your allies distract him. Then go to the opposite end of the arena and fire away at it from a safe distance. It should either start slowly charging at you or firing projectiles.
Rewards
Defeating Root Mantis rewards you with:
- Root Ganglia material,
