The Sims Video Game Series
The Sims is a series of games created by Maxis studio and published by Electronics Arts since 2000. The games in the series can be described as life simulators, in which, directing the avatars we create, we act out scenes from everyday life, but also build them houses, which they can then furnish according to their own vision. The series has sold more than 200 million copies, making it one of the world's best-selling games, and has twice made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
The first installment of the series, titled simply The Sims, hit personal computers on February 4, 2000. Will Wright, who at the time had experience developing a city simulator (SimCity 1989), or an ant life simulator (SimAnt 1992). The inspiration for the creation of the game The Sims was an unpleasant incident for the creator in 1991, in which his house burned down. While planning the construction of a new dwelling and its detailed furnishings, he came up with the idea of transferring the experience to the virtual world. Maxis was skeptical of Wright's idea and not very generous with its budget, which changed in 1997 with the studio's buyout by Electronics Arts, which, knowing the success of SimCity, saw great potential in the project. The game turned out to be a huge success and lived to see 7 expansions (such as Animals, Abracadabra or Date), two special editions, and came to various platforms - PC, PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube and Xbox. In five years, the game sold more than 16 million copies worldwide.
In 2004 came the second installment of the game - The Sims 2, set 25 years after The Sims. It was not without significant changes - both in graphics, which, unlike its predecessor, offered a completely 3D environment, but also in mechanics. Increased control over characters, a detailed sim creator, life aspirations, 7 life cycles (from infancy to old age), additional cities are just some of them. The game received 8 major expansions and 9 accessory packs. The Sims 2 proved to be an even bigger success with a 90-point rating on Metacritic and more than one million sales within 10 days of release. Eventually, the game was released on virtually every platform available at the time - PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, Game Boy Advance and GameCube.
The third part of The Sims premiered in 2009, despite the announcement of work on it by Electronics Art as early as 2006. This time the developers focused on interactive and vibrant environments, seasons, sim creation and house building modes enriched with new possibilities, and other elements. The Sims 3 hit both PC, desktop and mobile consoles and even smartphones, selling more than 10 million copies. The standard for the series was the release of 11 major expansions and nine accessory packs.
The latest continuously developed installment of the series - The Sims 4 - took place in May 2013. Despite good sales, the game received mixed reviews proclaiming poor content. This changed over the years with free patches released by the studio, as well as paid expansions released periodically. Thanks to them, players could create a vampire, a mermaid or at least an alien, populating one of the many available cities, where controlled sims could undertake a variety of activities - from training animals and fishing, to gaining fame in the world of social media and taking part in street themed festivals.
However, in addition to the four main game installments and the additional content released for them, the series The Sims has lived to see numerous spin-offs. Including unveilings focused on multiplayer gameplay, such as The Sims Online from 2002 and The Sims Social (available through the Facebook platform) from 2011, or role-play oriented The Sims Medieval based on the engine of the third installment of the game. Enjoying popularity on consoles as well, the series (not counting the main parts of the series) received such titles as those presenting the Sims version of Chibi My Sims 2010, The Sims FreePlay or The Sims Mobile.
