There are glimpses in here where some of the potential shines through, but not enough. Held back by a lack of depth and polish, the big selling points of the expansion struggle to flourish, resulting in a pack that's underwhelming despite its initial promise.
VideoGamer: 6 / 10 by Annie Thelen
While offering some beautiful build and buy items as well as some more controversy to a game that feels too clean, it can't make up for the empty experience For Rent gives.
GamesHub: 4 / 5 by Leah Williams
Very few expansion packs for The Sims 4 feel like they overhaul gameplay entirely, but For Rent does just that, reimagining how your Sims live their lives, and how they interact in the real world. While there’s not a whole lot more to the expansion pack than that, its changes to rentals and the introduction of community living makes it a stellar addition to The Sims 4.
The Sims 4: For Rent Description
The Sims 4: For Rent is an expansion to The Sims 4, a popular life sim by EA Maxis. It introduces five new character traits (such as generous and nosy), makes it possible to share your land with your neighbors or become a landlord. It also adds a new world, Tomarang, inspired by Southeast Asia.
Mechanics
For Rent is the creators' response to those fans who prefer renting pre-made apartments rather than to purchase or build a house. The expansion lets us divide a plot of land, letting several families live there. In such a building, the neighbors will interact often by necessity. They can argue over money or party together.
Becoming a landlord grants us a new source of income, but it also brings such duties as repairing broken devices (or face the residents' wrath) and evicting problematic tenants. There are new aspirations tied to this mechanic, such as secret hunting or becoming a perfect neighbor. We can either live alongside our tenants or manage the property from our own home.
The expansion also introduces the Asian-inspired world of Tomarang, many new activities and items. We'll get to visit botanical gardens, ghost houses, animal sanctuaries, cook oriental dishes (such as tofu pad thai and pancit bihon) and purchase rattan furniture.
Technical aspects
For Rent is a non-standalone expansion, requiring the base version of The Sims 4.
