General information on the trophies in Crash Bandicoot 2
Approximate difficulty level of trophy unlocking - 7-8/10 - Trophies in Crash Bandicoot 2: Strikes Back are slightly easier to unlock than those of the first installment of the series, but they still pose a challenge, and obtaining a platinum trophy takes a lot of effort and skill. Acquiring many trophies requires us to show great agility and precision. You have to replay levels in order to memorize their layout and then flawlessly perform all moves to you avoid (numerous) traps and enemies. What's more, some trophies involve beating a level within a certain timeframe. It often forces us to tediously work out a perfect route and then make an ideal run through it. The only consolation is the fact that the levels in the game aren't too long and even the most expansive ones can be completed in several minutes (not counting the time needed to replay a section when Crash dies).
Approximate time needed to complete the game 100% - Over 20 hours. The time needed to get a platinum trophy is very difficult to estimate because everything hinges on the player's skill. Moreover, in the case of Crash Bandicoot 2, being familiar with the classic version of the game is an advantage since the remake's levels have the same layout.
Number of trophies - 25 - There are 7 bronze trophies, 11 silver trophies, 6 gold trophies, and 1 platinum trophy to unlock.
Offline trophies - 25 - All trophies are unlocked in the single player mode.
Online trophies - 0 - Crash Bandicoot 2 doesn't have a multiplayer mode.
Does the difficulty level influence unlocking trophies? - Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back has no adjustable difficulty level. The only facility is that the game can slightly help us after Crash has died several times in a row - Aku Aku is summoned and provides us additional protection from some threats and creates an extra checkpoint.
Level replay feature - Present - Using this feature is pretty much mandatory since it is impossible to find all crates in some levels during the first run. Moreover, racing against time is unlocked only after we've beaten a level with the "standard" ruleset.
Minimum number of walkthroughs - One + replaying levels - Every completed level can be replayed at any moment to, for example, reach the omitted crates or play a race against time. Levels are selected in rooms with portals. We travel between them with the use of a central lift (new floors are unlocked as we progress in the game).
How to unlock all trophies in Crash Bandicoot 2
Step 1 - Unlocking the Cortex N. Furiated trophy
Try hard to acquire this bronze trophy because it involves performing several simple actions at the beginning of the game. The goal is to anger doctor Neo Cortex, who gives commands to Crash. If you miss this trophy, you can also unlock it later but you will have to start the game from scratch and complete the prologue once more (make sure to create a manual save game beforehand, otherwise the new autosave will erase your current progress!).
Step 2 - Completing all levels and beating all bosses
In Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, there are 30 levels and 2 hidden ones (Totally Fly and Totally Bear) that are unlocked by finding secret portals. Completing "exploratory" stages doesn't give you any trophies by default but beating them is required to unlock them for the purposes of replaying. The exceptions are trophies awarded for finding secret portals in select levels - in total, there are five such passageways to find.
Trophies are awarded for fighting bosses, too. There are five unique opponents in the game, and every won battle unlocks a trophy. In this way, you'll acquire two bronze, two silver, and one gold trophy.
Attention - From the very beginning of the game, try to manually save the game before every new level. If you lose too many lives in one, consider exiting it and loading the last same game. The reason for this is obtaining the 99 Percent Perspiration trophy, which is awarded for collecting 99 lives in total.
Step 3 - Unlocking trophies connected to various minor actions
Some of these trophies can be unlocked even effortlessly. We are talking about, for example, the Buzz Off! trophy, which is unlocked when Crash is stung by a bee for the first time, or the A Road Less Traveled trophy that is acquired when we explore the first bonus round (most of them are hard to miss).
While other "minor" trophies take some effort to be unlocked. These include, for example, Crash Cubed for making Crash die in very specific circumstances or Boom Shakalaka! for defeating five enemies with Coco's unique attack (she is an extra playable character).
Step 4 - Unlocking five colored Gems
There are Green, Blue, Purple, Yellow, and Red Gems to unlock and the good news is that, contrary to the original Crash Bandicoot, you don't have to complete an entire level without dying to get a chance at obtaining them. The Gems are awarded for performing specific actions in select levels of the game (i.e., for finding a secret path or completing a time race). More information on this topic can be found in the description of the Laser Powered Vengeance trophy. You will need the colored Gems to reach some of the crates and clear Gems.
Step 5 - Obtaining 37 clear Gems
There are three trophies connected to collecting Gems: A Diamond in the Rough, One Man's Trash, and Laser Powered Vengeance.
Apart from five colored Gems from the Step 4, there are also 37 clear Gems to collect. The number of the Clear Gems depends on the level - the maximum amount is two. The game awards them for completing a stage having destroyed all crates, flawlessly reaching the end of a death path, and for exploring the secret paths after using a colored Gem. More details can be found in the description of the Laser Powered Vengeance trophy.
Attention - Gems aren't awarded for winning boss fights!
Step 6 - Collecting 27 Gold Relics
Three trophies are connected to Relics: Kick the Tires!, Light the Fires!, and Wumpa-Burner Engaged!. The biggest difficulty is the fact that two of them force us to obtain gold Relics, which require us to have good scores in time races. It is a big challenge - perfect knowledge of the levels and the run route as well as flawless execution of all actions are a must.
Attention - Start collecting Relics after you've defeated the final boss because then you will obtain the Speed Shoes that are INCREDIBLY helpful in establishing records.
