Hang Eight | Crash Bandicoot 2 | Levels Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Guide
Last update: 27 July 2017
Secrets:
- Clear Gem #1 - Destroy all 74 of the chests. The feat can only be accomplished if you have the blue gem from Turtle Woods in your possession.
- Clear Gem #2 - Complete the stage in the allocated time limit. The time counter will appear once you've reached the first surfing board.
- 1 secret area (accessible if you have the Turtle Woods Blue Gem in your possession)
- 1 bonus section
Note - I recommend two separate playthroughs of the stage - one to gain Clear Gem #1 (awarded for destroying all chests) and one to gain Clear Gem #2 (awarded for completing the stage in the allocated time limit)
Walkthrough:
The stage takes place next to water, making it much more difficult, as even a small mistake can end up costing you a life. Moreover, stay alert during the surfing board sections - the board is propelled and maintains a quite unnerving speed, while the area is filled with mines and whirlpools.
Follow the narrow path forward which is guarded by piranhas and a carnivorous plant. The piranhas make a jump to the other side of the path when you come closer - you can engage them using your spin attack or simply wait and get past them when the fish lands on the other side of the path. The plants are more dangerous - you need to time your spin attack to be the first one to attack.
The road ends with a wooden pier which has a propelled surfing board parked inside. Start by destroying nearby chests and jump on the surfing board to begin the sequence. The board moves forward on its own - perform short turns using the analog stick to avoid mines (shown on the screenshot above) and whirlpools that will drown the board along with its user. If you are feeling confident, you can perform a short dash by pressing Square.
Note - The first surfing board sequence also marks the beginning of a timed challenge that is rewarded with a Clear Gem if successful. Your task is to reach the end of the level before time runs out. If it's your first playthrough, consider skipping the challenge in order to see the whole section and prepare yourself for the obstacles. The challenge is not that difficult - focus on using the afterburner to scale the river sections. Furthermore, you can save additional seconds by jumping straight to the second hippopotamus.
If you've managed to reach the next part of the level, activate the checkpoint and continue moving forward. Dispose of the carnivorous plants and step on the platform to begin the bonus section. The area has a total count of 11 chests, most of them easily accessible (move away from TNT crate to let it explode). You'll encounter a wall built from metal chests. Perform a slide or hold Circle to crawl.
Finish the bonus section and continue moving forward. Stop for a moment in the area seen on screenshot 1. If you've managed to acquire a Blue Gem (awarded for completing Turtle Woods without destroying any chests) the white outline will be changed into a platform that can be used to access a secret area. Here, you'll encounter a hippopotamus for the first time. You can use their backs as platforms, but the animal will start submerging if you stay on his back for too long.
The checkpoint ahead is surrounded by eight explosive chests. Perform a jump to reach the checkpoint and slowly continue to the surfing board. Start moving forward and reach the metal chest shown on screenshot 2. Hitting it will add additional chests in the areas visited earlier. Return to the pier and use Boost before each ramp to be able to reach the fixed chests. If you've managed to reach the end of the area, hit the green chest (you'll detonate all nitroglycerin chests nearby) and leave the secret area.
Regardless of whether you've visited the secret area or not, continue moving up the river. Focus on the hippopotamus section, as you need to make a longer jump in order to reach the ledge ahead. If you've made it to the other side, pick-up the violet crystal and continue. You'll encounter two hippopotamus which you need to use to get to the next ledge.
Activate the checkpoint and use the new surfing board. As always, avoid mines and whirlpools and use the encountered ramps (press Square to activate the afterburner). You'll soon reach the final walkway that leads to the portal.
