The following page of the guide will introduce you to the rifts and corruption mechanics in Total War Warhammer 3.

Rifts

Rifts appear regularly all over the world during the campaign every dozen or so turns - always in the same places - Total War Warhammer 3: Rifts and Corruption - Basics - Total War Warhammer 3 Guide

Rifts appear regularly all over the world during the campaign every dozen or so turns - always in the same places. They lead to the Realms of Chaos. Thanks to these portals, you can travel to the lands of the gods of chaos and get the souls you need to win the game.

There are different types of rifts. Each god of chaos has their own. They spread a particular type of corruption, which causes various difficulties. If you play with a non-chaotic race, you will feel tremendous consequences. The daemonic influence weakens the stability of the province and can lead to internal troubles, if unattended. The situation isn't ideal even for the daemons themselves, because foreign corruption destabilize them as well.

Moreover, enemy demon units can pass through the portals. That is why it is always worth having a squad close to the rifts to close them.

Interacting with rifts

Each lord can interact with the rifts, but only the leader of your faction can fully use their potential - Total War Warhammer 3: Rifts and Corruption - Basics - Total War Warhammer 3 Guide

Each lord can interact with the rifts, but only the leader of your faction can fully use their potential. "Normal" characters can only close the portal. You must prepare for an attack of an army of demons when you try to destroy it.

However, the faction leader may move to the Chaos Realm. It also can close the rifts and teleport between them, which can quickly bring them to the other side of the map (not for free, though).

Corruption

Corruption is the daemonic influence in a given province. For non-chaotic races it is deadly, as it introduces unrest and lowers stability, and high corruption causes armies to become exhausted even on their own lands.

You can check the province corruption level by selecting any settlement. It will appear in the lower left corner. - Total War Warhammer 3: Rifts and Corruption - Basics - Total War Warhammer 3 Guide

As mentioned before, even the daemons themselves don't like corruption that comes from other races, as it also causes disturbance in their lands. The only nation that tolerates all demonic influences are the Daemons of Chaos.

While daemonic corruption is the focus of Total War Warhammer 3, there are also other types of undesirable influences as well, i.e. Vampiric and Skaven, which work independently and also harm other factions.
