Mission objectives:

  1. Build a Spawning Pool and a Hydralisk Den;
  2. Protect the chrysalis
  3. Destroy the terrans

You are brought to life as a new creature in the Zerg Swarm. The powerful Overmind is a kind of a leader of the zerg, and you are the Cerebrate, one of the commanders. You've been given a special task on the planet of Tarsonis. While at it, you'll learn the basics of commanding the zerg.

The zerg mutate their Larvae into other units instead of producing them in, for example, Barracks. This is why its a good idea to build more Hatcheries. The zerg mutate their Larvae into other units instead of producing them in, for example, Barracks. This is why it's a good idea to build more Hatcheries. Overlords provide control over an increasingly bigger population.

First, expand your base before training extra soldiers. Remember that you lose workers when erecting buildings and you have to place them on a special goo called the Creep. Only a Hatchery can be created outside of this area and is the only building that provides Larvae. These, in turn, mutate into different units. At first, you can access a Drone (workers, can create structures) and an Overlord. The latter is a mobile equivalent of a Supply Depot/Pylon. They increase the population limit, detect invisible units, and can serve as transporters. Build the two buildings required in the mission objectives. From now on, you can evolve Larvae into basic combat units of the zerg. Keep your troops at the gas deposits because it is the terrans' (1) favorite attack direction.

Drones are your basic workforce. Apart from mining, they literally create buildings. During this process, you have to say farewell to the Drone but the building is built faster and can regenerate. Buildings can only be placed on a special goo called the Creep. - Mission 1 - Among the Ruins | Zerg | Campaign Walkthrough - Zerg - StarCraft: Remastered Game Guide

Hydralisk is a durable zerg unit that can attack land and air units and is also capable for Burrowing. In this state, it heals faster and is invisible to the enemies, aside from Detectors. Zerglings are your cannon fodder. For 50 minerals and just 1 Control point (population count), you receive two units. From 6 Larvae and 300 minerals, you can create a full team of Zerglings. These are very fast melee units that are very dangerous to small hostile groups. These units and their use is where the term "Zerg Rush" originates from. It means producing a large number of cheap units and attacking enemy positions as soon as possible. It works better in multiplayer than in the story campaign, but it is still useful for swarming the enemy.

The southern Barracks can be destroyed using just Zerglings. - Mission 1 - Among the Ruins | Zerg | Campaign Walkthrough - Zerg - StarCraft: Remastered Game Guide
The southern Barracks can be destroyed using just Zerglings.

Create a group of Zerglings and destroy the Barracks in the south (2). Now, go back to the base, replenish your forces, and attack the enemy Starport from the left side (3). It is located on the northern hill. Then, reinforce your army, create a team of Hydralisks, and assault the main base in the top right corner of the map (4). On your way there, you'll encounter small enemy groups. If you have problems with commanding and selecting targets, it is a good idea to choose a Zergling group and give them the Attack Move order, which has the units attack an area of your choosing instead of a specific building/unit. In this way, your troops will attack everyone on their way. Meanwhile, take Hydralisks and select their targets, starting with Firebats and Goliaths. Having destroyed the defenders on the foreground, attack the Barracks (5). This will stop the enemy from creating new units. Then, destroy the Command Center and the remainder of enemy forces.
