Assassins Creed Shadows: Best weapon
We present our original selection of the best weapons in AC Shadows. From this guide page you will learn which weapon to choose, how the weapon system in the game works, what the colours on the weapons mean and how to unlock new weapons.
Last update:
To be honest, it's hard to point out one best weapon that will give you the certainty that you can handle most enemies. A large part of the equipment is generated randomly, has random statistics, perks, various rarities and levels. In addition, more important than the quality of the weapon is its level, which changes with the development of the character, so quite often. Therefore, on this guide page, you will find advice exclusively about the type of weapons for both heroes - Naoe and Yasuke. We also explain how the weapon system in the game works, what the background colors on weapons mean, and how to unlock new types of weapons.

Best weapon for Naoe
For Naoe, we definitely recommend two types of weapons:
- tanto - it's a weapon that allows you to perform double assassinations. With a tanto, you can also quickly destroy enemy armor and perform fast combinations ending with powerful slashes. So, the tanto is the best weapon for sneaking and fighting single enemies, which fits well with Naoe's style.
- kusarigama - the best weapon for combat - it can easily keep enemies at a distance and knock down entire crowds. With its help, it will be much easier for you to get out of life-threatening situations - no other weapon of Naoe is capable of killing so many enemies at once. In addition, at a later stage of the game, you can unlock a perk that will allow you to perform stealth attacks with this weapon from a distance and pull unsuspecting enemies towards you. At this stage, fighting with this weapon feels like cheating.
Best weapon for Yasuke
Playing as Yasuke, it's best to equip one melee and one ranged weapon, especially during assaults on enemy bases. All the alarm bells in the game are hung very high, and Yasuke is very slow, both when running and climbing, so be sure to equip him with a bow and teppo to deal with the bells before the guards can use them.
Besides, the choice of weapon for Yasuke depends much more on your preferences. The samurai is a one-man army regardless of the situation and weaponry, so you have a much wider choice - even the naginata, with its wide swings which should be its weakness, handles single targets well. Additionally, Yasuke unlocks new weapons much slower than Naoe, which means that by the time you finally unlock his full arsenal, you should already have experience with each weapon and know which one you like the most.
How does the weapon system work and why don't we indicate one as the best?
Every weapon in the game has two main parameters that affect its statistics:
- rarity is indicated by the background color on the weapon icon. From the weakest to the strongest, these are the gray, green, blue, purple, and gold weapons. Weapons of gray, green, and blue quality can be purchased from vendors or found randomly in chests scattered throughout the game world. The purple and gold weapons require completing side or main missions. Weapons of green quality or better also have unique, randomly generated perks.
- level - refers to the level of experience a character must achieve in order to use a specific weapon.
The higher the quality and level of the weapon, the better the weapon's statistics and its damage.
The weapon's level plays a much more important role than rarity and turns out to be the most important factor when selecting a weapon. Both the damage dealt by weapons and the health of opponents significantly scale with each new level. This means that even a legendary weapon with excellent, legendary perks drastically loses its power after just a few levels. The attached image shows a comparison of a level 23 legendary, golden tanto with a level 26 green tanto - just three levels after obtaining it, the legendary tanto is already underpowered. The best weapon in the game is therefore any weapon with a level closest to yours - even the legendary perks of a golden weapon are not worth the drastic drop in damage you will encounter after a few levels.
If you find a high-quality weapon with perks that you really like, you can upgrade it in the forge in your hideout. This increases its level and stats, allowing the weapon to further compete with the rest. However, upgrading weapons is expensive and requires a large amount of crafting materials, which you find by searching containers and chests, as well as dismantling weaker weapons. You will not have enough resources to constantly upgrade all your equipment - therefore, focus on one or a few pieces of equipment, and replace the rest with new ones as you go along. While playing Assassins Creed Shadows, you will have to prepare for constantly exchanging gear with better pieces.
How to unlock new types of weapons?
Naoe and Yasuke, have several types of weapons at their disposal - Naoe has three, and Yasuke has five. At first, they only have a katana. The rest of the weapons unlock over time. You can unlock new weapons by buying them in a store, earning them as a reward for completing a main mission or a side activity. For example, at the beginning of the game, you won't find any kusarigamas in the containers. When you buy your first kusarigama from a vendor or complete a story mission that rewards you with a kusarigama (in this case it is the last mission of The Wounded thread, the first main objective of the game), only then will kusarigamas be added to the loot pool and start appearing in the game world. All weapons in the game work on the same principle. If no merchant offers the type of weapon you want to get, make progress in the main story, explore enemy bases or kofuns.
