Step 1: Learn more about Gargoyles
In order to learn more about Gargoyles, you just need to kill them - you can find them in three spots in the city: (M31, 5), (M31, 10) and (M31, 21). You can also talk with Bras of Ban Ard (M31, 20), or buy a few books regarding gargoyles - they can be bought from Felicia Cori (M31, 25) and Bras of Ban Ard (M31, 20).
Step 2: Find and deactivate the magical seals
You will learn that gargoyles are magical creatures that guard the city and attack anyone inside the protected area. In order to get rid of the monsters, you have to find and deactivate magical seals which bound the gargoyles. There are three basements with seals: south of the main gate (M31, 5), north of the main gate (M31, 10) and nearby the amphitheatre (M31, 21).
Inside each basement you will find a chest and four signs which you have to extinguish in a given order. In order to learn the meaning of each of them, you can buy four books regarding the Runes of Power from Bras of Ban Ard (M31, 20) and Felicia Cori (M31, 25), 75 orens each. Each of them contains a description of three runes - first you have to recognize the four found in the basements. The screens below show the proper names of each rune.
 The Rune of Death (resembles a scythe)

 The Rune of the Animal (resembles a snake creeping along a riverbed)
|  The Rune of Sky (line within a parallelogram or, as some would have it, a pursed mouth)

In order to open the chest, you have to extinguish the signs in a proper order. Inside each basement you will find a note with hints regarding the proper order. Below you will find a detailed description of the poems, with words pointing to the runes marked. By combining both information, extinguish the signs in a proper order. They have been marked using colours to make them more distinguishable: the rune of death, time, animal, sky.

Step 3: Get your reward from Bras of Ban Ard
Once you break all the seals, return to Bras of Ban Ard (M31, 20) to collect your prize for getting rid of the monsters.
