In the Claws of Madness (steps 1-7) The Witcher 2 guide, walktrough
Last update: 11 May 2016
Received from: Cedric (M7, 7) or Rupert (M8, 7)
Step 1: Find the hospital ruins
You can approach this mission by talking with Cedric (you can find Cedric's notice on the notice board) or meeting Rupert in the woods. Either way you will meet Rupert (M8, 7). From Cedric you will learn of an old hospital, to which the mentally ill were being sent. However one day a fire started and everyone burned in their cells.
Step 2: Defeat the Nekkers and enter the hospital ruins
You won't be able to learn too much, apart from the fact that Rupert's friend Gridley stayed in the ruins, as you will be attacked by Crazed Nekkers. You shouldn't have any problems with exterminating them. Once you clear the area, head towards the ruins.
You will hear a dog right beside the entrance to the ruined hospital (M8, 10) and after a few moments later you will be attacked by two more Nekkers. After dealing with them go down the stairs into the hospital. Once you reach the first passage, a ghost (M10, 2) will appear and enter the next room through the wall.
Step 3: Find the ghost in the next room
Going right is impossible because of the fire, so go to the end of the corridor. You will note a window there (M10, 3) - jump through it to the neighbouring room.
Step 4: Defeat the wraiths
Inside you won't encounter the ghost, but two wraiths (M10, 4). Fighting them is very difficult, try to use both Aard to stun one of them and Yrden to immobilize. The big room is to your advantage, as you can dodge without any problems.
Notice! After killing the wraiths you can take the Essence of Death, which is needed in Melitele's Heart and might be used in The Kayran to create the potion. Therefore it's worth taking - especially if you haven't approached those mission yet. |
Notice! Inside the room you will find a chest (M10, 5) containing Hospital files III and Hospital files, connected with Returning Memories. After collecting all parts and reading them, you will be able to talk about them with Vernon Roche. |
Step 5: Explore the hospital ruins
After getting out of the room, you will once again see the ghost (M10, 6), this time going through fire. Once you approach, the fire will disappear and you will be able to move on. Go to the stairs leading to the lower part of the hospital (M10, 7) - there won't be any surprises on the way.
Once you jump down, two more wraiths (M10, 8) will appear - the fight is no different from the last one, with the only change being the slightly smaller room, which reduces the possibility to dodge.
Notice! Inside the room you will find a chest (M10, 9) with Hospital files I, connected with Returning Memories. After collecting all parts and reading them, you will be able to talk about them with Vernon Roche. |
Eliminate the monsters and move on. You will see the ghost for the third time (M10, 10).
Continue down the corridor and eventually you will reach Gridley (M10, 11). Trying to talk with him won't have any effects, the man is unable to say anything. You have to find some medicine for the poor fellow.
Step 6: Find some tranquilizers for Gridley in the ruined hospital to calm him down
You won't have to look too far, especially that most of the other paths is blocked by fire. You can find the medicine for Gridley is one of the branches of the main corridor, on a table (M10, 12). However, when only you approach it, two wraiths will appear (M10, 13). This time the fight will be more difficult, considering the very small area. Try to always have Quen active for protection and immobilize the monsters with Yrden.
Notice! Inside the room you will find a chest (M10, 14) containing hospital Acts II and Medical notes on patient 15, connected with Returning Memories. After collecting all parts and reading them, you will be able to talk about them with Vernon Roche. |
Step 7: Give Gridley the medicine
Return to Gridley (M10, 11) and give him the medicine. The man will eventually start talking and tell the story of the war with Nilfgaard and - of course - the treasure connected with it.
