Chapter 4: Rock and a Hard Place - Good morning at the farm | Episode I: A New Day The Walking Dead Guide

Last update: 11 May 2016

Go left, then to the background of the screen (but dont enter the barn) and then left again - Chapter 4: Rock and a Hard Place - Good morning at the farm | Episode I: A New Day - Episode I: A New Day - The Walking Dead Game Guide

Go left, then to the background of the screen (but don't enter the barn) and then left again. Go past Katjaa and Clementine and keep going left till you get to Duck and Shawn. Before you talk to either of them (although the former doesn't really have anything interesting to say anyway), you can look at the following objects (from right to left): a Tractor, a makeshift Fence and a pile of Wood on the left. First of all, however, start a conversation with Shawn by offering your assistance ("Need a hand?").

6. "Just shot him right in the face."

(1): Was the boy one of the walkers?

-

(2): You gotta do what you gotta do.

Shawn disagrees.

(3): Damn.

-

(4): ...

-

7. " Have you had to off one yet?"

(1): Sometimes it's kill or be killed.

Shawn won't forget that.

(2): I bashed a poor girl's brains in.

Shawn won't forget that.

(3): I had to shoot one.

Shawn won't forget that.

(4): ...

Shawn noticed your silence.

You can answer whatever you wish when it comes to the last of Shawn's questions. Shawn will ask you to help his father who has just got inside the barn. Go there. This is the moment when you must deal with the first of the five "tough decisions" in the first episode.

[TOUGH DECISION #1]

  • Telling Hershel Greene the truth.
  • Lying to Hershel Greene.
The choice youll make will not affect the gameplay, however, it will count as far as the statistics at the end of the episode is concerned - Chapter 4: Rock and a Hard Place - Good morning at the farm | Episode I: A New Day - Episode I: A New Day - The Walking Dead Game Guide

The choice you'll make will not affect the gameplay, however, it will count as far as the statistics at the end of the episode is concerned. Hershel's attitude will strictly depend on whether you introduced yourself immediately the day before and whether you told the truth about the accident. Hershel will ask you four questions and it's up to you to tell him the truth or not (it will be the very "TOUGH DECISION") and also how you will respond to his last question.

The next honest answers are, for example, "I got a ride.", "No wife anymore.", "What are you getting at?", and the last one is "Sure." or "What is it?". Hershel is going to have a bit negative attitude towards you anyway, however, your replies can reduce his hostility (telling the truth or remaining silent), or significantly increase it (lying).

If you weren't particularly bothered about the difficulty of the first choice, your optimism might get a little dampened, as taking a much more difficult decision is ahead. Wait until the end of the cutscene and make a decision that will significantly affect the course of the further episodes.

[TOUGH DECISION #2] - Chapter 4: Rock and a Hard Place - Good morning at the farm | Episode I: A New Day - Episode I: A New Day - The Walking Dead Game Guide

[TOUGH DECISION #2]

  • Trying to help Shawn.
  • Trying to help Duck.
  • Not doing anything.

Remember that, first of all, you cannot save both - you have to choose. Second, regardless of the choice you've made Shawn will die anyway. Third, you can also do nothing and the result will be the same - Shawn will die, while Duck will be saved by his father (it will count as helping Duck). Finally, it is better to save Duck, as this will have a very positive effect on your relationship with Kenny - and you'll spend a lot of time with this character in this and the following episodes. You will find a detailed description of each of the choices below.

Trying to help Shawn

You can hit the Zombie with your fist, pick up a Board and use it to hit the zombie (you must aim properly), or pull the Tractor - Chapter 4: Rock and a Hard Place - Good morning at the farm | Episode I: A New Day - Episode I: A New Day - The Walking Dead Game Guide

You can hit the Zombie with your fist, pick up a Board and use it to hit the zombie (you must aim properly), or pull the Tractor. It does not matter what you'll do. After a while, Kenny will come and he'll save his son, but he will be too panicked to help you save Shawn. Once again, do anything to end this scene.

8. "You tried to help him, but this piece of shit let him die."

(1): It's nobody's fault.

Kenny will remember that.

(2): It's Kenny's fault.

Kenny will remember that.

(3): It's my fault.

Kenny will remember that.

(4): ...

Trying to help Duck

You can hit the Zombie with your fist, pick up a board that is lying behind Lee (the best choice, as doing so will end the scene at once) and use it to hit the zombie (you must aim properly), or pull Duck - Chapter 4: Rock and a Hard Place - Good morning at the farm | Episode I: A New Day - Episode I: A New Day - The Walking Dead Game Guide

You can hit the Zombie with your fist, pick up a board that is lying behind Lee (the best choice, as doing so will end the scene at once) and use it to hit the zombie (you must aim properly), or pull Duck. After a while, Kenny will come running and he'll start to pull Duck. Help him in order to end the scene if you didn't hit the zombie with the board earlier. Shawn will be bitten to death by the zombies. It does not matter what you say in the conversation with Hershel Greene.

Not doing anything

Just as it has been mentioned earlier, you can refuse to help both Duck and Shawn. To do this, simply do nothing, and when Kenny saves Duck, do nothing once more.

Summary

Regardless of the decision you have made, Hershel will be devastated by the death of his son. He will tell you to get out of his farm immediately. After a while Kenny will offer you a lift, so the five of you (Lee, Clementine, Kenny, Katjaa, Duck) will leave Hershel's farm.
