Red Dead Redemption 2: Fast travel - how to use? Red Dead Redemption 2 Guide and Walkthrough
On this page, we have described how fast travel works in RDR2. Among the options, you can travel by train, stagecoach, or teleport between camps.

In Red Dead Redemption 2 your horse is the most basic way of travelling around the world - this solution has pros and cons. One of the pros is that you can save time on travelling between locations that are far away from each other. Sadly, horses aren't as fast as cars in GTA 5. They also get tired fast which forces you to stop galloping. However, Rockstar Games offers players a few variants of fast travel that can solve this problem partially.
- Can you teleport to a location?
- Fast travelling in a train
- Fast travel in a stagecoach
- Fast travel from a gang hideout
Can you teleport to a location?
The answer is no. The first Red Dead Redemption allows you to jump to a location after setting a camp in wilderness. However, the prequel doesn't have this feature except the option to fast travel from the gang hideout (more about that later). Red Dead Redemption 2 also doesn't allow you to open the map and use fast travel.
Fast travelling in a train
The game has a well-developed railway network - trains travel accordingly to the schedule. Arthur Morgan can visit a train station or a train stop and buy a ticket to travel to another place (even to stations that he hasn't visited yet). The travelling process is presented in a cut-scene - you don't have to wait for the train.
Travelling by a train costs money - the amount you have to pay depends on how far away your destination is from your location. The prices aren't high, however, paying a dozen of dollars for a train trip when you are only a few hours into the game can hurt. The advantage of using trains is that you reach your destination in several dozens of seconds. Also, your horse will wait for you next to a station.
You can also jump into a moving train - this can be done either on foot or when you are riding on a horse. However, the train must move slowly. Here, you move around the entire map and stop on every train stop. Remember that this solution allows you to jump out of a train whenever you want. Arthur can't leave a train if he bought a ticket on a station.
Note - Unless Arthur whistles, your horse won't follow you when you decide to jump into a train. After that the horse will follow its owner. The animal stops on a station or when you decide to jump out.
Fast travel is available only to locations that have train tracks, i.e. towns such as Saint Denis, Valentine, Annesburg and Rhodes. There are also stops located in complete wilderness.
Fast travel in a stagecoach
Red Dead Redemption 2 also allows you to fast travel by using a stagecoach. The stations are marked with a telegraphic pole icon - a ticket can be "purchased" by clicking on the pole that marks the stop (a stagecoach doesn't have to be there although it is possible that the vehicle will be present). Just like with trains, the amount of money you have to pay depends on the distance. The prices are similar.
A stagecoach's advantage is that it can reach more places than a train, i.e. to Strawberry, a town located in mountains. Contrary to what has been said in the previews, your horse will wait for you after arriving in a stagecoach.
Additional note - You may be unable to use stagecoaches to travel around the world at the beginning of the game, that is when you reach the second chapter. You may have to discover other regions to unlock this option.
Additional note - You can't travel in a stagecoach if there is bounty for your head (i.e. after committing a crime). Remember to pay the bounty first before you use a stagecoach (you can do that at any post office).
Fast travel from a gang hideout
Fast travel from a gang hideout is free - you don't have to pay anything for "teleporting". This option isn't available right from the beginning. You need to purchase it from the book available in the camp.
- Go to the Lodging tab in the book.
- First, you have to purchase Dutch's (First Things First) lodging upgrade for $220. This doesn't unlock the fast travel yet but this step is necessary in getting the next upgrade.
- Purchase the fast travel map (Next in Line) for $325. From now on you are able to use fast travel option in Arthur's lodging. The map is placed near your bed. Interact with it and select your destination.
From now on you can use the map to fast travel from the gang hideout. The map is attached to Arthur's wagon (on the opposite side from the bed). Interact with it to select your destination. This method of fast travelling has the most options because it allows you to travel to almost any location (initially, only to those that have been discovered by Arthur). Arthur travels on a horse which means that you will always have your mount with you.
WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD!
After completing the storyline, John Marston can also use the map to fast travel. It is located in one of the rooms in Beecher's Hope.
