Shadow of War: Which upgrades are the best for siege defense? Middle-earth: Shadow of War Guide

Last update: 20 December 2022

When you capture a fortress in Middle-earth: Shadow of War, you can then spend silver coins on upgrades. They can make a defense easier and can strengthen an overall level of your fortress. Upgrades are assigned to captains that participate in a defense and more upgrade slots are unlocked by reaching higher levels. On this page of our guide we present, you can find a list of upgrades our types.

Your orc captains should be very resistant because they will be able to hold control points longer.

Slot 1 - available upgrades:

  1. Stone Walls - solid, stone walls that can help you in defending yourself from attackers.
  2. Reinforced Stone Walls - these stone walls are reinforced which means that they can last longer.
  3. Metal Walls - these walls, reinforced with thick iron, can withstand a lot of attacks.

Which are the best - Metal Walls, obviously, but this upgrade is rather pricey (7500). The stronger the wall, the longer it takes for attackers to perform a siege.

Slot 2 - available upgrades:

  1. Iron Gates - outer and inner gates are now reinforced.
  2. Poison Spouts - toxic clouds come out of holes in walls, they burn skin and suffocate attackers that are climbing up those walls.
  3. Fire Spouts - fire comes out from holes in walls which burns Olog-hai that want to destroy them. An unconventional choice for a wooden fortress.

Which are the best - if enemies have an Olog-hai then you should select Fire Spouts. Iron Gates are a safe and good choice too.

Slot 3 - available upgrades:

  1. Savage Host - savages join your army - they are assault units that wield axes.
  2. Defender Host - defenders join your army - they are a heavy infantry that uses shields and can be helpful in holding control points for longer.
  3. Hunter Host - hunters join your army - they throw spear and are extremally useful against beasts.

Which are the best - similarly to assaults on fortresses, Defender Host are the best choice. Their resistance makes them the best out of the three upgrades.

Slot 4 - available upgrades:

  1. War Caragors - a group of ferocious Caragors roams a fortress. They are ready to rip anyone, who attacks you, into shreds.
  2. Hellfire - gates are guarded by Drakes kept in cages that burn attackers with their fire breath. A controversial choice for a wooden fortress.
  3. War Graug - a War Graug defends your fortress and is itching to crush and devour attackers.

Which are the best - I really appreciate Hellfire which helped me a lot and defended gates in critical moments of defense. A War Graug is also a good option although some captains have no problems in dealing with them.

Slot 5 - available upgrades:

  1. Spiked Walls - walls are reinforced with spikes and attackers can't climb them.
  2. Fire Archers - archers can shoot your enemies with fire arrows.
  3. Farsight Archers - archers can shoot enemies from a greater distance, eliminating them before then even reach a fortress.

Which are the best - Fire Archers. I strongly recommend this upgrade because archers, both during defense and attacks, are very powerful. Their ability to set enemies on fire helps a lot.

Slot 6 - available upgrades:

  1. Poison Mines - control points are guarded by Poison Mines that suffocate and burn attackers.
  2. Fire Mines - a path to a fortress is full of mines that can set attackers on fire and terrify them.

Which are the best - a rather difficult choice. Personally, I prefer Fire Mines but Poison Mines are also very good. You can buy both upgrades and make a few experiments that can help you decide which are more useful to you.
