CAMP - building a base in Fallout 76 Fallout 76 Guide, Walkthrough

Last update: 29 November 2018

The CAMP system is one of the main gameplay elements of Fallout 76. Thanks to that you can build various bases - it is only up to you whether you create a regular house or a vast fortress, with defense turrets, energy generators and water purification system. The following chapter explains the main functions of the CAMP and answers the questions that might arise during the creation of a base.

How to build?

Start by setting up the CAMP. - CAMP - building a base in Fallout 76 - Gameplay basics - Fallout 76 Guide
Start by setting up the CAMP.

The first step to build your base is to place the CAMP system on the ground - the necessary button can be found in the Pip-Boy menu. While placing the CAMP you will see a green circle - this represents the area in which you will be able to place objects and buildings. If the CAMP flashes red, it means that you will not be able to build your base at that location and that you need to move a little further.

And then build up your base.

Once the CAMP system is set up, you can start the construction. In the building mode you will see over a dozen of different categories, containing an enormous amount of elements - foundations, walls, doors, crafting tables, defense turrets, traps, energy generators and defensive walls. Right next to each of those objects you will see the materials required to construct it and (in some cases) other information - like, for instance, the required electrical energy or perk.

Single objects, like cooking stations or generators can be placed anywhere. This works differently if you want to construct an entire building. You cannot place a wall or stairs anywhere - you first need to place foundations. Afterwards, you can place walls, doors, stairs and different floors on the foundations, finishing up with a roof. Single elements of buildings link together when placed in close proximity to one another.

In the construction mode you will see all of the buildings in the game, but you will not be able to construct all of them immediately. Some of them require you to read their blueprints first. Blueprints are scattered around the entire game world, but you can also purchase them from other players. A blueprint must be examined in the inventory for the specific object to appear in the construction mode.

What can you build?

The game doesn't force you what and when to build in any way. You can use the available objects freely and create sophisticated constructions. Aside from buildings that you will create on your own, it is worth remembering about several objects:

  1. Generators. They create electric energy that can be used to power up devices and lamps. For instance, you find a water purification device in the construction mode. If you supply it with water via pumps and power it up with the generator, you will have a system of automatic water purification. Thanks to that you will receive a specific amount of purified water each hour, instead of standing by the cooking station and doing it yourself.
  2. Aside from water purification, you can also create your own food. You will find several types of plants in the food category. This will allow you to grow, for instance, tomatoes and collect several fruits each hour.
  3. You can place all of the crafting stations through the construction mode. Once done, you will not have to go to city to repair your weapon, cook meat or create a piece of armor - all that can be done inside your base.
  4. Nothing stands in your way if you decide to construct defensive structures. A huge selection of walls, defensive turrets and traps allows a craft player to create an impenetrable fortress. You can use them to attack other players or defend against mutants.

How to get construction materials?

Construction materials can often be found lying on the ground. - CAMP - building a base in Fallout 76 - Gameplay basics - Fallout 76 Guide
Construction materials can often be found lying on the ground.

Quite obviously, constructing things is not free. Each building requires a specific amount of materials like wood, steel or aluminum. All of the materials can be acquired simply through exploration. Sometimes you stumble upon a felled tree, allowing you to acquire wood, but most of the crafting materials are gained through collecting junk - items that can be disassembled into small ones, which are then used for construction. Collect as many junk items as you can and then disassemble them at any crafting table - this will allow you to acquire large amounts of construction materials.

What are the benefits of constructing a base?

Stashes scattered around the world are connected to one another. It does not matter into which one you have put your items - you can draw them from any stash. - CAMP - building a base in Fallout 76 - Gameplay basics - Fallout 76 Guide
Stashes scattered around the world are connected to one another. It does not matter into which one you have put your items - you can draw them from any stash.

The aforementioned benefits - clean water and food - require a lot of commitment in building the base. There are, however, two quite immediate benefits of the CAMP that you will gain access to regardless of how large your base is:

  1. You can teleport to your CAMP for free, from any place on the map.
  2. You can construct stashes in camps. Those are used to store items. Those are the same stashes that you stumble upon in other locations and you are the only one with access to their contents. If you place something in one of those, you can take the item out from any stash located in the world.

What happens to the base when I exit the game?

If you leave the game, your base will disappear from the server along with your character. Once you are back in the game, the system will try to place your base back at the same location. If the area is not available, your entire base will get transferred to the "Stored" tab available in the construction mode. Objects from that tab can be placed anywhere for free. You do not have to worry that your base will be lost once you leave the game - your CAMP will be located at the same location or the contents of your base will be safely stored in your inventory.

Note - you can hide objects to the Stored tab on your own. You can also process the already created items, regaining half of the invested materials.
