What we need | Whimsyshire Diablo III Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
To gain access to Diablo III's hidden level, we need to acquire a recipe for the Staff of Herding for the Blacksmith, and collect a set of five items.
Plans: Staff of Herding (ACT IV)
The plans for the Staff of Herding are dropped randomly by Izual, the last but one boss in Act IV. You'll encounter him on The Great Span, between the 1st and the 2nd level of The Silver Spire during the Prime Evil quest. It's probable that you'll have to do this quest and fight Tyrael's former lieutenant multiple times. |
To reach Whimsyshire on higher difficulty levels, go to Bastion's Keep. For one gold coin you can buy improved plans for the staff, adjusted to your current difficulty level, from Gorell the Quartermaster (on the condition that you're in the middle of completing the Prime Evil quest). If you already have the Staff the Herding, you don't need to look for items to make it. Simply craft it at the Blacksmith's, paying as follows:
- 200 000 on Nightmare;
- 500 000 on Hell;
- 1 000 000 on Inferno.
Once you have the plans, go to the town, open the crafting menu and use the right mouse button on the recipe in your equipment. The Staff of Herding will appear among items available for crafting. To craft it, you need to pay 50 thousand gold and have the following "ingredients":
- Black Mushroom
- Leoric's Shinbone
- Liquid Rainbow
- Wirt's Bell
- Gibbering Gemstone
It's worth mentioning that they are assigned to the Battle.net account, so they can't be bought and, once dropped, other players can't pick them up. On the other hand - there's nothing stopping you from inviting (or joining) a friend after finding the item / chest / opponent - this way a couple of players can obtain the material in one go. This kind of cooperation greatly increases the searching process.
Black Mushroom (ACT I)
Those who played Diablo I can surely remember the quest where Adria the Witch asked us to bring her some black mushrooms from the lava caves under the cathedral in Tristram.
In Diablo III, the Black Mushroom can be found on the first level of the Cathedral in Act I. Since it's a randomly generated item, search the whole location very thoroughly, specifically looking for a large square chamber.
Leoric's Shinbone (ACT I)
Can be found by clicking the fireplace in one of the rooms of Leoric's Manor, just before the entrance to the Halls of Agony Level 1 in Act I. The room in question is a larger chamber to the right of the manor's entrance. Unfortunately, whether we find what we're looking for is completely random, so we'll probably be forced to reload the game a couple of times. It remains unexplained what is a bone of the Mad King of Tristram doing in a pile of burned wood. Maybe it's better not to touch the subject...
Liquid Rainbow (ACT II)
It's one of the most difficult items to find. Go to Dahlgur Oasis in Act II, specifically use the "Path to the Oasis" waypoint, which is unlocked during the Betrayer of the Horadrim quest. In the south part of the Oasis there is a watery location with a couple of houses, where Zevan the Alchemist is fighting off haunts. |
After winning the battle, a way to a Mysterious Cave will open. On its 1st level there will probably be a (randomly generated) Mysterious Chest, with the wanted item inside. Note! The search can take up to several dozen attempts where you'll have to exit and load the game again!
Wirt's Bell (ACT II)
Remember the one-legged boy Wirt from the first Diablo? If so, you'll be happy to know you can have his bell. You can buy it in Act II from a girl named Squirt, who trades in Caldeum Bazaar or (further in Act II) at the Hidden Camp. Wirt's Bell costs 100 000 gold and it can be found in the "Miscellaneous" tab.
Gibberring Gemstone (ACT III)
The second, following Liquid Rainbow, hardest to find material for the Staff of Herding. With luck, you can find it in Act III. To become its happy owner, head to "The Bridge of Korsikk" waypoint, and to the Fields of Slaughter from there. In the north-west or the south-east area there should be Caverns of Frost (not to mistake with Icefall Caves!). Go down to the 2nd level and look for an elite boss called Chiltara, which spawns randomly and drops the Gibbering Gemstone. If you can't find it at the first try, exit the game, reload the quest and hope that you'll find both the Caverns of Frost and Chiltara at the next go.
