Build example | Wizard Diablo III Guide

Last update: 01 February 2017

My Wizard build is basically a confirmation of my previous statement about how universal this character class can really be. The skills suggested by this build allow to create a character than can be called a "battle mage", because he can fight on the first lines of the front, fighting on many occasions alongside a Barbarian or a Monk. It's not a common way of using this character class, because in most online games Wizards often hang in the back and support the rest of the team from a safe spot. I can assure you however that combined with good equipment you can easily use this build to advance to the Inferno difficulty setting. And what then? Well, all build require from the player to be focused on Inferno and to use the available skill wisely. This one is no different.

Active skills

Spectral Blade + Deep Cuts (19) - Build example | Wizard - Wizard - Diablo III Game Guide

Spectral Blade + Deep Cuts (19)

This is a basic type of an attack that should be assigned to the left mouse button. It allows to inflict a lot of damage in close combat and thanks to the suggested rune the attacks are even more powerful.

Hydra + Venom Hydra (38) - Build example | Wizard - Wizard - Diablo III Game Guide

Hydra + Venom Hydra (38)

This is a skill that should be assigned to the right mouse button and if used properly (and after some training) you'll be allowed to add the hydra to the battlefield before starting each fight. The best thing about this skill is that it lasts 15 seconds, so you won't have to pay attention to it after it's been casted. The hydra also chooses and attacks the targets on its own. As for the rune I've chosen for it, it increases the damage by creating a venomous pools that harm all enemy units standing on them. You're free to choose any other rune before the one mentioned in the build becomes unlocked.

Diamond Skin + Mirror Skin (32) - Build example | Wizard - Wizard - Diablo III Game Guide

Diamond Skin + Mirror Skin (32)

This skill allows you to become virtually indestructible for a few seconds. You must pay a lot of attention to its cooldown process, activating it as soon as it becomes available again. When playing on higher difficulty levels you may even consider retreating for a few seconds in order to wait in a safe place for the skill to regenerate. The suggested rune makes the skill even better, because it allows for the enemies to receive back some of the damage they've inflicting and it'll probably save your skin more than once.

Familiar + Sparkflint (30) - Build example | Wizard - Wizard - Diablo III Game Guide

Familiar + Sparkflint (30)

I've decided to have a familiar by my side only because of the rune mentioned above. The reason for that is because it increases the damage dealt by the Wizard by 12%. The creature itself harms opponents with projectiles inflicting 20% of the weapon damage, however it's not as a smart as hydra and it doesn't choose the targets on its own. In other words - it shoots where you aim and only there. While playing on Normal and Nightmare you might consider choosing Archon + Pure Power (46) combination instead of this one.

Magic Weapon + Venom (46) - Build example | Wizard - Wizard - Diablo III Game Guide

Magic Weapon + Venom (46)

This is another skill which is used only to raise your character's DPS value. It increases the damage by 10% and thanks to the suggested rune it also poisons the targets, adding another 15% of damage for the next three seconds.

Energy Armor + Force Armor (54) - Build example | Wizard - Wizard - Diablo III Game Guide

Energy Armor + Force Armor (54)

This skill is most useful while fighting champions and other bosses. It increases the armor values and it scales the damage you get so that you will never receive more than 35% of your maximum life points. I've started using this skill while playing on the Hell difficulty and before that my favorite skill was the Ice Armor combined with the Jagged Ice rune (42). I've ultimately realized that my current tactics weren't working, because my Wizard was losing too much damage. As a result I've changed my mind and started using this combination.

Passive skills

Glass Cannon (16) - Build example | Wizard - Wizard - Diablo III Game Guide

Glass Cannon (16)

You shouldn't be bothered with the side effects of this passive skill (lowered armor rating and resistance) until you reach the Inferno difficulty setting and you'll be thanking the DPS bonus which will make your attacks much more powerful. Once you've started playing on Inferno you should switch this skill with Blur (10).

Galvanizing Ward (40) - Build example | Wizard - Wizard - Diablo III Game Guide

Galvanizing Ward (40)

This passive skill not only increases the duration of armor spells, but it also activates health regeneration at the same time. The regeneration itself will not be as efficient when you'll gain more Life points, however it'll still save you from dying on more than one occasion.

Unstable Anomaly (60) - Build example | Wizard - Wizard - Diablo III Game Guide

Unstable Anomaly (60)

After you'll start playing on the Hell difficulty you'll be finding yourself quite often surrounded by problematic opponents and with nowhere to go. This skill opens a way to survive, releasing a shockwave in a critical moment which knocks backs all nearby enemies and gives you about two seconds of peace. As you've probably noticed it can't be unlocked early in the game so before you can use it you should rely on Cold Blooded (30) skill instead, especially since it works well with the Ice Armor active skill.
