Final Fantasy Video Game Series

Final Fantasy

A series of jRPG games set in various universes combining fantasy and science fiction elements. The series was created by the Japanese studio Square and is one of the most important brands in the portfolio of the Square Enix publishing concern.

The creator of the series is Hironobu Sakaguchi. First Final Fantasy was released in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System console. According to industry legend, the title Final Fantasy (English. Final Fantasy) was supposed to indicate that it was the last game of the financially troubled Square studio, and the last hope of rescue for the team. The game's commercial success saved the company from bankruptcy and at the same time allowed it to develop an idea that eventually evolved into one of the longest-running series in video game history. Over the course of nearly 40 years, not only were more than a dozen games included in the mainstream (denoted by Roman numerals) released, but also dozens of side installments (spin-offs, sequels, prequels, etc.), as well as a number of remasters and remakes. The series has played on more than a dozen of the most popular hardware platforms, with desktop consoles being the most common (and since the release of Final Fantasy VII - platforms signed with the PlayStation logo).

A mobile installment of one of the most popular jRPG series, based on the free-to-play business model. Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius is set in the world of Lasis were we can encounter magic crystals. Thanks to them, humanity entered a path of prosperity and peaceful development. Alas, the forces of evil approach the land with the intention of destroying the crystals. The campaign tells the story of two knights who become the realm's last line of defense, along with other famous Final Fantasy characters. At the core of the game are turn-based battles during which we command a party of several heroes of different abilities and equipment. The title features an extensive magic system that lets us combine attacks of companions into powerful combos. Outside combat, we explore the world, have conversations, visit stores, and develop skills. The available missions usually require us to wade through hordes of enemies and to defeat a boss. The adventures are relatively short and therefore even few-minutes sessions make sense.

An economic strategy game developed by Machine Zone. The game takes place in Eos – a fantasy world created for the 2016 game Final Fantasy XV. The plot is of little importance in this title, giving way to the online gameplay, which is shaped by the decisions of the players. The gameplay focuses on expanding the kingdom. During the game, the player constructs buildings, gathers resources and researches new technologies. Although the game is based on a simple economic system, it also contains a military aspect: the player must recruit warriors and make them fight the AI-controlled forces in real time. Although player’s army is accompanied by characters from the console RPG - including Noctis and Cindy - playing the game alone is not a good idea. It is much better to create a guild or to join one and cooperate with other players.

The plot of the game takes place in Grimoire – a completely new world, but the characters and creatures from all previous installments of the series make an appearance. What’s interesting, Grimoire has been divided into two dimensions: in the first of them, the characters look normal, while in the second one they assume the sweet form of chibi. The main characters of the story are Rain and Lon, twins who fulfill their great destiny, experiencing various adventures. When it comes to mechanics, the title is similar to the previous entries in the series, including typical exploration segments and turn-based enemy encounters making use of the Active Time Battle system. Nevertheless, the whole gameplay has been somewhat simplified in order not to scare away the younger players. An interesting feature of the game are the taming mechanics, with animals acquired this way helping us during encounters.

The 9th main entry in a classic jRPG series, originally released in 2000 on PlayStation console, and ported to PC ten year later. After a few games featuring slightly cyberpunkish settings, Final Fantasy IX returns to the roots of the series, where we are once again met by knights, princesses, and dragons. Players take the role of a young thief, who, together with a company of other heroes, faces the evil queen Brahna, who is responsible for the outbreak of a great war. However, as it turns out, the queen has been nothing more than a pawn in the hands of a much more dangerous enemy. In terms of game mechanics, the game is a combination of proven solutions with some limited innovations, such as a redesigned profession system or ATE mode (Active Time Event), which allows us to see what other team members are doing, give access to numerous side quests and a chance to collect various useful items.

The action of Final Fantasy Type-0 Online is set in a technologically-advanced fantasy world called Orience where four powerful nations wage war against each other. The players control a group of teenagers from an elite military school specialized in training young students in magic and military operations. The title draws inspiration from mechanics of the multiplayer mode of Final Fantasy Type-0 and improves them. Therefore, this is a multiplayer action RPG game, in which small groups of players explore maps filled with creatures and powerful bosses, and the gameplay focuses primarily on battles that make use of an arcade combat system. Warriors rest in the school between the expeditions, where they can form bonds and, by taking classes and playing mini games, learn new skills.
