Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV for PS4 is a spin-off of the role-playing game Final Fantasy XV, released in 2016. The production requires the PlayStation VR goggles. It is the first VR game by Square Enix, originally intended as a first-person shooter, but in the end a different genre has been chosen.
Plot
The story focuses on the characters known from Final Fantasy XV — Noctis Lucis Caelum and his three companions, Gladiolus Amicitia, Ignis Stupeo Scientia and Prompto Argentum. They roam the world of Eos in search of the eponymous monster, which lives in one of the bodies of water.
Mechanics
Final Fantasy XV featured a fishing minigame, utilizing one of Noctis' abilities. Square Enix decided to develop the idea and created a fishing simulation game, which became Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV. During the game, you have to do all the standard activities connected with this type of entertainment: use bait, set the hook when the fish starts tugging, and fight the animal trying to escape, pulling the line and swimming in all directions. You can also e.g. scan the lake with a special device before casting to see if there's anything worth fishing for. Moreover, after a successful hunt you can sit by the fire and listen to the NPCs talk while eating the cooked fish.
Technical aspects
Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV features a similar style to that found in the core game. Of course, the production has been appropriately adapted for VR goggles — the world is no longer fully open, and the game utilizes the first person's perspective.
