General information about the challenges in Doom Eternal
Challenges in Doom Eternal are entirely optional - you don't need to complete them to finish the campaign. Current challenges can be viewed in the Challenges tab in the pause menu, although it is worth noting that not all types of challenges are immediately visible there - mission challenges start appearing in mission 3, and weapon challenges are available only after unlocking a mastery.
The game informs you about your progress in challenges by showing messages on the right edge of the screen. You can, for example, learn about completing a challenge, or how many kills you need to complete the challenge.
You can also pin the challenges (Pin option) to follow them in a simpler way. This will reduce the risk of forgetting about a challenge - if you play on PS4, select a challenge and assign it to the X button.
Mission Challenges
This is the first of three major challenge categories. Mission Challenges start appearing in the third mission. There are always 3 different challenges to complete. They can have various requirements - perform specific glory kills, attack groups of opponents, or find specific collectibles.
Check our walkthrough to learn more about the Mission Challenges and how to complete them.
The reward for completing each set of 3 mission challenges is a Sentinel Battery. As a reminder, you can use these batteries to open rooms in the Fortress of Doom.
It is worth noting that you don't have to complete all the challenges during a single run of a given mission. If you missed a challenge, you can repeat the level and focus only on the missing challenge. You won't lose progress from the other challenges.
Weapons Challenges
Weapon Challenges can only be done after purchasing a weapon upgrade and all its improvements (those that require weapon points). This is the only way to get mastery.
In most cases, challenges from this group involve using a given weapon to kill several or dozens of demons in certain ways. For example, it may be necessary to kill a group of monsters with a single attack or destroy weak points on their bodies.
Gaining mastery for a given weapon upgrade unlocks a useful passive feature. This can be, for example, continuous fire without overheating the weapon or without reloading it.
It is worth noting that weapon challenges can be overlooked by using master tokens - this is a good method for completing the most difficult challenges. The whole process has been discussed in more detail on How and why should I upgrade weapons? page.
Weekly Challenges
Weekly Challenges are available only if you are connected to the game servers. According to the name, they are replaced each week by another. Challenges from this group have different goals, such as attacking demons with certain weapons or winning battles in Battlemode mode.
Your rewards for completing weekly challenges are experience points - XP. They allow you to achieve higher ranks and unlock rewards such as cosmetic items. Always try to pass as many challenges as possible (at least 4 out of 8) to receive extra large XP bonuses.
Check out How can I change the character's appearance? page, where we have described the rules for the use of prizes/cosmetic items received e.g. by reaching a higher rank.
